Our world is built around convenience, for example, 2 in 1 Shampoo and Conditioner. In theory, it seems like a good idea, but the practical application can sometimes turn out to be a disaster. So…here are some natural remedies that can benefit both your skin AND hair. Just to name a few:

 

  •  Aloe. Most of us know aloe as being used for skin. It is the most well known, natural remedy for sunburn. Stylecraze.com discusses its many other skin benefits, including its promotion of younger skin. If used daily, it will help “achieve proper skin restoration”. But you may not have heard of aloe as something to use for your hair. It has been often used as a hair loss treatment and can also help if you have dryness on your scalp.
  • Honey. According to treehugger.com, the antioxidants in honey can help fight wrinkles and aging skin, as well as help with the treatment of acne. It opens up your pores and can help soothe irritation. It’s also extremely good for your hair, according to everydayroots.com. It can help moisturize dry or damaged hair as well as encourage hair growth.
  • Argan Oil. This oil is a great one to use because it is not greasy, according to mindbodygreen.com. It can work as a face moisturizer and hydrating toner, as well as help fight against stretch marks. It’s also an amazing product for your hair, as it can work as a leave-in conditioner as well as add a nice shine to your hair if you apply it after your hair is already dry.

 

These natural two-in-one products are the only ones I would consider using!

It helps in repairing dry and sun-damaged hair. The damages that are caused to the hair by exposure to the dirt, pollution and other environmental toxins can be treated with the banana mask.”

For this Mask all you will need is one ripe banana and 1 tablespoon of olive oil or coconut oil (whatever oil you prefer) and a shower cap.

Step 1: Put the banana and oil in a blender and blend until the ingredients look like a paste. Tip: if the paste is too runny add a dash of flour to it.

Step 2: Apply the mask to damp hair from root to tip.

Step 3: After you apply the mask put a shower cap on to lock in moisture. Let the mask sit for 20-30 minutes and then rinse out first with warm water and then blast it with some cold water. Shampoo and Condition if necessary.

Step 4: Style hair however you want.

Step 2: Apply the mixture to damp hair, start at the roots and work your way down the hair shaft.

Step 3: Cover your hair with a shower cap to lock in moisture and let the mask sit in your hair for 30 minutes.

Step 4: Rinse out with warm water, don’t shampoo but condition if necessary.

Step 5: Optional: After you wash it out with warm water blast your hair will some cold water to lock in shine!

Step 2: After you decide how many tea bags you will need; now you need to steep the tea bags in hot water for 10-15 minutes and then let it cool. Once it cools down, you can take the tea bags outs and it is ready to use. Tip: You can leave the tea (with the tea bags) in the fridge overnight for a stronger rinse.

Step 3: Applying the rinse; first you should shampoo your hair, then pour the rinse on your hair. You could also put the tea in a spray bottle and spray your hair with the tea instead on pouring it on. Let it sit for 20-30 minutes.

For as long as I can remember I was always told to shampoo before condition, but more recently I heard that you should actually condition your ends before you shampoo you hair.  This whole concept of reverse washing is pretty interesting. Most shampoos strip your hair of its natural oils, and then once you condition you hair feels soft and just like new.

What should you use first shampoo or conditioner?

Since shampoo rids your scalp of build up you should only use it on your scalp. Hellogigles.com says, “Basically, the idea is that your scalp produces oil that naturally cleanses and moisturizes your scalp and hair. The only reason to shampoo is to rinse those oils out when they have built up too much and give your scalp a reset.” If you put shampoo on your ends it could strip your hair leaving it dry and dull.

Reverse Washing

Reverse Washing is when you condition your hair first and then only shampoo the roots. Dailymail.co.uk says to, “Wet your hair then work in your favorite conditioner, concentrating almost solely on the ends of the hair, with just a tiny bit at the roots. Leave the conditioner in for five minutes, then rinse thoroughly. Only now should you shampoo, rinse, and repeat, making sure you don’t use more product than you need.” Conditioning your ends first will coat them and protect them from the stripping properties in your shampoo.
Here are 3 reasons why it’s important to condition your hair before you shampoo.

1. Makes Detangling Easier

If your hair is really knotty and you always have a problem detangling it, you should definitely try reverse washing your hair. The conditioner will coat your ends leaving them moisturized and tangle free. Gadailynews.com says, “Reversing the order in which you wash your hair is meant to give you all the detangling and glossing benefits of conditioner - along with extra volume - but without any residual side-effects.”

2. Adds Moisture

If you condition your hair first it would feel dull and weighed down. Womenshealthmag.co.uk says, “The idea behind leaving a conditioner on for 2 - 3 minutes is so that the goodness can penetrate into the hair, so that when you rinse your hair properly, the work is done. However, when you don't wash out the conditioner properly, this will leave a film over the hair which attracts dirt and more, leaving it feeling lackluster.”You hair ends won’t be stripped from the harsh chemicals in shampoo, so they won’t feel dry and dull or weighed down.

3. Prevents Damage

If your ends are really damaged reverse washing is perfect because it will protect your ends from further damage. Refinery29.com says, “Washing the conditioner out with shampoo can prevent it from weighing your hair down — and if your hair is prone being flat and greasy, this is a great thing, indeed.”

Whether you hair is healthy or damaged, treating your hair with a hair mask is a perfect way to get your hair ready for spring. Putting a hair mask on could be very relaxing; Massage the mask into your scalp and then let it sit for 20-30 minutes. I like to apply a hair mask on Sunday night that way my hair is nice and fresh for the week.

Here are 4 easy DIY Hair Masks:

Coconut Oil & Honey Hair Mask

This mask is perfect for damaged hair. Coconut oil and Honey have properties that are great at nourishing damaged locks. For this mask all you will need to do is combine 1 tbsp. of Coconut Oil and 1 tbsp. of Raw Honey in a mixing bowl. You can either melt them in the microwave or in a saucepan. Then apply the mixture to dry hair starting at the ends and working your way up. After you apply the mask an optional step would be to wear a shower cap so the mask penetrates your hair quicker.

Banana Milkshake Hair Mask

This mask is perfect for deep-conditioning your hair. I found the recipe for this hair mask from glamour.com.  For the best results you should leave this mask on your hair for 20-25 minutes and put your hair in a shower cap so the mask won’t drip onto your clothing or furniture. So for this mask all you need is 2 bananas, coconut milk and honey. You can either manually mix all three items together in a bowl or put them in a blender. You should apply this mask to dry hair, after leaving it in for 20 minutes wash it out and shampoo and condition as normal.

Avocado Hair Mask

The properties in avocados are great for deep conditioning hair and make it look shiny and feel amazing. For this mask all you need to do is mix together one egg yolk, one teaspoon of extra-virgin olive oil and one teaspoon of honey together in a bowl. Then add a mashed avocado to the mix.  You can apply this mixture to wet or dry hair. If you apply it to wet hair apply the mixture to your hair and then massage it into your scalp fro 5 minutes and then let it sit for 10-15 minutes.

Mayo and Avocado

This mask is perfect for dry and dull hair that needs extra moisture. This mask was found on bellasugar.com. For this mask you will need ½ avocado, ¼ cup of mayo, 1 tbsp. of coconut oil, 1tbsp. of olive oil, 1tbsp. of honey and 2 ounces of water. Put all of these ingredients in a blender and mix them together. You should start out with wet hair and then apply the mask. Use a shower cap to lock in heat and allow the mask to penetrate your scalp. Then after 20 minutes wash it out and rinse your hair with cold water.

As the warmer weather makes it way in, you may start to see some changes in your hair. There are several things you can do to prepare your hair, skin and nails for the warm spring weather. Here are some helpful beauty tips for spring!

Hair

When I first heard that you could use oats on your hair I was a tad skeptical, all I thought about was oats are for making oatmeal, not for your hair. But I was so wrong there are so many benefits of using oats on your hair. Here are 4 different ways that oats can benefit your hair!

1. Moistuizes Dry Hair

Using oats on your hair will get rid of any dryness and even an itchy scalp. Cassandrebeccai.com says, “That’s because it contains hair-loving B-vitamins, which acts like a humectants (a substance that draws water from the atmosphere onto itself). If you hair or roots get oily very quickly, try making an oatmeal hair mask that will not only cleanse your scalp but eliminate that extra oil that is ruining your hair. 4. DIY Dry Shampoo

In previous blog posts, I have mention that dry shampoo is a great product to use. You can use oats and baking powder to create your own dry shampoo right at home. Rd.com suggests, “Put 1 cup oatmeal in the blender and grind it into a fine powder. Add 1 cup baking soda, and mix well. Rub a bit of the mixture into your hair. Give it a minute or two to soak up the oils, then brush or shake it out of your hair (preferably over a towel or bag to avoid getting it all over).”
