hair care

It seems as though in every advertisement we see, the model has ultra shiny hair. While it would be ridiculous to not credit that partially to photo editing, it can still make us envious...and desperately desire glossy hair! Here are a few easy tips to avoid every-day hair damage and help you get the shiny hair you have always wanted:

  • Take cooler showers! Don’t freeze yourself but, if you’re used to taking steaming-hot showers, it’d definitely be beneficial for you if you turned it down a notch. According to health.com, heat splinters the surface of the hair and makes it seem uneven and dull. Rinsing your hair with cooler water for only ten seconds can help you achieve shinier hair!

  • Don’t rub your head with a towel after getting out of the shower! This causes breakage and damage to the wet-hair shaft. Instead, after getting out of the shower, you should slowly  brush your hair with a wide-toothed comb. That is the least damaging after-shower hair care method!1

  • Hair dry properly! When blow drying, remember to direct the nozzle down the hair shaft. Then, afterwards, use the “cool” setting on your blow dryer to finish off your hair. Just like rinsing with cold water at the end of a shower, this will help you achieve shinier hair!2

  • Use a silicone flat iron! This might not be something we think about often, but metallic and ceramic flat irons cause a lot more damage to hair than silicone flat irons do, due to the fact that they are not as effective and take much longer to use.

In previous blog posts, I have mention that dry shampoo is a great product to use. You can use oats and baking powder to create your own dry shampoo right at home. Rd.com suggests, “Put 1 cup oatmeal in the blender and grind it into a fine powder. Add 1 cup baking soda, and mix well. Rub a bit of the mixture into your hair. Give it a minute or two to soak up the oils, then brush or shake it out of your hair (preferably over a towel or bag to avoid getting it all over).”

What is Macadamia Nut Oil?

Macadamia Nut Oil is an essential oil extracted from the nuts of a macadamia tree. It is used in many skin and hair care products as well as for cooking.  This oil differs from others because it doesn’t leave the scalp greasy and is easily absorbed into the scalp and hair shaft. According to wiseGEEK.com, “This product is made by extracting oil from the macadamia nut which grows on a macadamia tree. Although this tree originated in various parts of Australia, many locations throughout the world have become home to the macadamia tree. The chemical make-up of this product is similar to oils that the human body produces which makes macadamia oil for hair easy for the body to absorb.”

Benefits of Macadamia Nut Oil on Hair

  • Increase Strength: The stronger your hair is the less damage and breakage you will have. When Macadamia Nut Oil is applied to your hair, (including the roots) it can increase the strength of your hair and make it strong and smooth.
  • Repairs Dry Hair: Macadamia nut oil is very light compared to other oils such as olive oil. It is easily washed out can contains important vitamins and minerals that are essential in treating dry and damaged hair. Examiner.com says, “The high absorption and deep penetration of the hair and scalp means both obtain the proper moisture they need to stay healthy. The vitamin E contained in the macadamia oil helps hair to soften and rejuvenate. Even thick, coarse hair is able to soften up. The proteins help to strengthen and promote healthy hair.”
  • Eliminates Frizz: The essential fatty acids and vitamins found in macadamia nut oil are what eliminate frizz. Buzzle.com says, “It is capable of moisturizing and strengthening rough, dry, frizzy and limp hair. This is because unlike coconut oil which penetrates the scalp, this oil coats the hair follicles and scalp, thereby preventing loss of moisture.
  • Say bye bye breakage: Macadamia Nut Oil is easily absorbed into hair, as I said before; it coats the hair and makes it stronger. When your hair is stronger you won’t have to deal with breakage. Livestrong.com says, “macadamia nut oil helps to prevent against hair breakage by penetrating the scalp and hair follicles to improve hair strength and elasticity.”

Application of Macadamia Nut Oil

According to wiseGEEK.com, “One of the most common applications of macadamia oil for hair is to warm the mixture in the microwave or on the stove and distribute it equally throughout the hair including the scalp. Most product directions suggest that the client leave the oil on the hair for up to two hours before rinsing and styling as usual.”

DIY Hair Mask

For this mask you will need 2 avocados that are peeled and pitted and 1 tbsp of Macadamia Nut oil. You can either mix them in a bowl together or put them in a blender. You should apply this mask after you shampoo your hair in the shower. Rub and massage the mixture all over your hair. Leave it on for 10-15 minutes and then wash out. Your hair should feel soft so you don’t need to use conditioner as well.
