healthy hair

It seems as though in every advertisement we see, the model has ultra shiny hair. While it would be ridiculous to not credit that partially to photo editing, it can still make us envious...and desperately desire glossy hair! Here are a few easy tips to avoid every-day hair damage and help you get the shiny hair you have always wanted:

  • Take cooler showers! Don’t freeze yourself but, if you’re used to taking steaming-hot showers, it’d definitely be beneficial for you if you turned it down a notch. According to health.com, heat splinters the surface of the hair and makes it seem uneven and dull. Rinsing your hair with cooler water for only ten seconds can help you achieve shinier hair!

  • Don’t rub your head with a towel after getting out of the shower! This causes breakage and damage to the wet-hair shaft. Instead, after getting out of the shower, you should slowly  brush your hair with a wide-toothed comb. That is the least damaging after-shower hair care method!1

  • Hair dry properly! When blow drying, remember to direct the nozzle down the hair shaft. Then, afterwards, use the “cool” setting on your blow dryer to finish off your hair. Just like rinsing with cold water at the end of a shower, this will help you achieve shinier hair!2

  • Use a silicone flat iron! This might not be something we think about often, but metallic and ceramic flat irons cause a lot more damage to hair than silicone flat irons do, due to the fact that they are not as effective and take much longer to use.

It’s hard to believe that there’s a wrong way to brush your hair but, apparently, there is. And, there’s not just one wrong way to brush your hair... there’s several! Here are a few hair brushing habits you may have that are seriously hurting your hair:

  • Brushing your hair from root to tip. It may seem unnatural to start at the tip when brushing your hair, but starting from the root of your hair can pull the hair out of the follicle and snap your hair!1

  • Brushing your hair when it’s wet. When your hair is wet it is weaker and more susceptible to breakage. Try to wait for your hair to dry before you start the detangling process!

  • Brushing too much. People used to say that brushing your hair 100 times before going to sleep would prevent breakage, but brushing your hair too much can actually lead to more breakage.

  • Using a dirty brush. Try not to use brushes full with hair, oils, or old residue from previously-used hair products. People don’t realize how important it is to clean their brushes!2

For those who don’t have curly hair naturally, knowing how to use a curling iron becomes second nature. Unfortunately, so does hair damage. To avoid heat damage from styling tools, check out a few of our favorite tips that will help you achieve curly hair in a healthier way:

  • Braids! NewHealthGuide.org suggests that, after showering, instead of letting your hair dry, create braids in your damp hair. Keep them in overnight to wake up to beautiful waves!

  • Wear a headband! Put a headband on the top of your head and pin your hair up over the headband, one section at a time. The headband acts as a holder for your hair. Sleep on your hair for this to work most effectively!

  • Rollers! There are a variety of different rollers that work great to curl your hair- and they don’t require heat! Wrap your hair around the roller as you would normally, then allow them to sit in your hair for awhile to achieve the perfect naturally-curly look.

  • Use your fingers! Hair.allwomenstalk.com suggests combing your wet hair thoroughly and then twisting strands of hair around your finger. After doing this to all sections of your hair, wrap a silk scarf around your hair for thirty minutes. Remove the scarf, then let the rest of the drying process happen on its own.

If your hair is becoming thin and no hair product seems to help, think about incorporating more almond-based snacks into your diet. According to HealthMeUp.com, magnesium deficiency can lead to hair loss and guess what almonds are- an amazing source of magnesium!

TheHealthSite.com notes the other health qualities of almonds. For example, they are rich in calcium, Vitamin D and E as well. When these minerals and vitamins work together, they have a “softening action” that prevents your hair from becoming brittle, thus promoting stronger and thicker hair. LiveStrong.com clarifies that magnesium in your diet not only helps maintain your body’s normal functioning, but also encourages hair, skin and nail growth. Almonds are an easy way to achieve strong, thick and healthy hair.

Unfortunately, hair-damaging ways of styling are commonplace, more so than safe and healthy strategies. These methods can leave your hair looking stringy and feeling lifeless. Here’s a list of ways we commonly damage our hair AND some suggestions to repair the damage.

  • Bleaching! The chemicals you use to bleach your hair are more damaging than you’d think. According to WebMD, by bleaching your hair, you are changing its structure and making it more susceptible to damage. Your hair becomes weaker! To fix the damage done by bleach, don't shampooing for a week!1 Let your hair restore its natural oils. Use deep-moisturizing conditioners, and avoid heat-styling devices!
  • Ponytails and braids! This one seems surprising, doesn’t it? While braids and ponytails are effective hairstyles when trying to avoid styling your hair with heat, they can still be damaging if you pull your hair too tightly! To avoid damage caused by ponytails or braids, do not put your hair up when it is wet and don’t pull your hair too tightly!
  • Putting in hair extensions! The damage done by hair extensions is very reminiscent of the damage done by ponytails and braids. Over time, hair extensions can make your hair weak and brittle. The damage is done at the roots- making getting a hair cut not the most viable option. Avoid hair extensions and take vitamins to achieve long locks the healthy way!
  • Over-shampooing! Wait, this is a thing? We were surprised too! Over-washing can wash away your hair’s natural moisture. Try shampooing your hair every two days, or every other day if possible!
  • Over-brushing! Sometimes, your hair simply can’t handle the constant friction of hair-brushing. It can cause split ends and breakage. Avoid brushing your hair and trying to separate and tame your unmanageable strands with your fingers when possible!

With Summer officially approaching, hair care is something to take into EXTRA consideration. Summer can be very rough on our hair! To prevent damage and get the gorgeous locks you see in fashion magazines, check out a few tips to deal with thinning hair:

  •  Nioxin.com has four helpful suggestions for us, one of them being- start eating more amino acids! You may be suffering from thinning hair due to the lack of biotin, iron, protein and zinc in your diet.
  • Try to avoid chlorine-filled pools! Chlorine, metals and minerals can be left on the scalp and hair and may lead to thinning.
  • Check your medication! Medication including hormones can also lead to hair loss.
  • Don’t yank your hair out!  Be gentle with your hair, it is one of your most prized possessions. Avoid hairstyles that pull at it too tightly and avoid damaging heat-styling tools.

And lastly…

  • Chill out! Stress is the most obvious cause of thinning hair. This can be solved with a nice drink by the pool, or even a relaxing scalp massage! Prevention.com states that rubbing your scalp with coconut oil in a circular motion right before you shampoo can increase circulation in the scalp and help your hair grow!
