  • Repair Damaged Hair: If your hair is damaged from coloring or heat styling, using an avocado hair mask will help make your hair healthier and smoother!

For as long as I can remember I was always told to shampoo before condition, but more recently I heard that you should actually condition your ends before you shampoo you hair.  This whole concept of reverse washing is pretty interesting. Most shampoos strip your hair of its natural oils, and then once you condition you hair feels soft and just like new.

What should you use first shampoo or conditioner?

Since shampoo rids your scalp of build up you should only use it on your scalp. Hellogigles.com says, “Basically, the idea is that your scalp produces oil that naturally cleanses and moisturizes your scalp and hair. The only reason to shampoo is to rinse those oils out when they have built up too much and give your scalp a reset.” If you put shampoo on your ends it could strip your hair leaving it dry and dull.

Reverse Washing

Reverse Washing is when you condition your hair first and then only shampoo the roots. Dailymail.co.uk says to, “Wet your hair then work in your favorite conditioner, concentrating almost solely on the ends of the hair, with just a tiny bit at the roots. Leave the conditioner in for five minutes, then rinse thoroughly. Only now should you shampoo, rinse, and repeat, making sure you don’t use more product than you need.” Conditioning your ends first will coat them and protect them from the stripping properties in your shampoo.
Here are 3 reasons why it’s important to condition your hair before you shampoo.

1. Makes Detangling Easier

If your hair is really knotty and you always have a problem detangling it, you should definitely try reverse washing your hair. The conditioner will coat your ends leaving them moisturized and tangle free. Gadailynews.com says, “Reversing the order in which you wash your hair is meant to give you all the detangling and glossing benefits of conditioner - along with extra volume - but without any residual side-effects.”

2. Adds Moisture

If you condition your hair first it would feel dull and weighed down. Womenshealthmag.co.uk says, “The idea behind leaving a conditioner on for 2 - 3 minutes is so that the goodness can penetrate into the hair, so that when you rinse your hair properly, the work is done. However, when you don't wash out the conditioner properly, this will leave a film over the hair which attracts dirt and more, leaving it feeling lackluster.”You hair ends won’t be stripped from the harsh chemicals in shampoo, so they won’t feel dry and dull or weighed down.

3. Prevents Damage

If your ends are really damaged reverse washing is perfect because it will protect your ends from further damage. Refinery29.com says, “Washing the conditioner out with shampoo can prevent it from weighing your hair down — and if your hair is prone being flat and greasy, this is a great thing, indeed.”

Lemons are used in many food recipes or are used to spruce up your water. They are full of vitamin b & c and have can be very beneficial when used on your hair. According to medicaldaily.com, “Lemons are a versatile fruit providing a number of aesthetic benefits. Originating in Asia, lemons have an extensive history but mostly of one used in cooking. However, many dermatologists and beauty gurus have recommended the use of lemons in daily skin maintenance.”

Here are three different ways to use lemon juice on your hair!

1. Get rid of Dandruff

Lemon juice is perfect for removing dandruff and cleansing your scalp of product buildup. Instead of using head and shoulders or some other store bought anti-dandruff product, try using lemon juice. TypeF.com suggests to, “Massage a generous amount of lemon juice into your scalp to remove any dandruff buildup and protect the scalp from further dryness. Massage the lemon juice into your scalp for several minutes, then shampoo and condition as normal.”

2. Lighten your hair

This is perfect for the summer, instead of spending a lot of money on highlights or bleaching your hair, you can naturally lighten your hair with lemon juice. Medicaldaily.com suggests, “Mix the juice from four lemons with ¼ cup of warm water, put it in a spray bottle, and spray it in your hair until it's damp. Make sure you only expose your hair to the sun for about 30-60 minutes, depending on how light you want to make it. After you’re done, take a shower and use conditioner, as lemon juice can sometimes dry out your hair.“

Click here for step-by-step direction on how to naturally lighten your hair with Lemon Juice.

3. Stimulate hair growth

Since lemon juice is so cleansing when applied to the scalp, it has properties that can stimulate hair growth. Zsobig.com says, “It can also help you to regulate the blood flow in the scalp and fight against hair loss by scrubbing lemon water on the top of your head (this can also help the hair to become healthy and shiny).” Typef.com suggests, massage a generous amount of the lemon juice or coconut water mixture into your scalp to increase the blood flow to your hair. Leave on your scalp for approximately a half-hour and shampoo your hair in a normal fashion. This will also increase the amount of nourishment your hair receives while activating your hair's natural oils to increase hair growth.”

Tip: According to stylecraze.com using lemon juice on your hair can delay new gray hair from growing in, “Mix few drops of lemon juice with amla juice into a mixture and apply this each night before going to sleep. Follow this for a month and continue. This will not only stop hair fall but also keep you safe from premature graying.”

Instead of putting honey in your tea, why not try putting it on your hair. Honey has properties in it that are great for rejuvenating hair and bringing it back to life. Stylecraze.com says, “Honey with all it goodness does wonders for your hair! It cures dry, damaged and dull-looking hair. It helps retain moisture and get rid of dry, itchy flakes on your scalp. It also helps keep your hair clean, lustrous, healthy and shiny.”Honey can be used to treat a number of different beauty related problems.  Here are several different ways you can use honey on your hair!

1.Add Shine

Applying honey to your hair will create a beautiful shine and everyone will be complementing you on your hair! Treehugger.com suggests, “There are two options. 1) Combine a spoonful of honey with a quart of warm water. Rinse through hair after shampooing. Let it condition for an hour, then rinse. 2) Mix 1-1/2 tsp honey with 5 cups warm water. Rinse through hair and leave on. Dry and style as usual.”

2.Moisturize Dry Scalp & Hair

Typef.com says, “On your scalp, this means you can say bye-bye to dry, itchy flakes. On your hair, a bit of moisture retention helps create hair so luscious and healthy it shines. “To moisturize dry locks, heat together three tablespoons of olive oil with two tablespoons of honey. Then add a tablespoon of lemon juice and mix well. It is best to apply the mixture to the scalp and hair when still warm. Leave it for a minimum of 30 minutes and then rinse and wash off.

3.Stimulate Hair Growth

Nothing will make your hair grow long overnight, but there are things you can do to increase the slow process of healthy hair growth. Stylecraze.com says, “As honey is an emollient, it also improves the health of the hair follicles which are responsible for hair growth. Researchers say that proper use of honey of treatment of hair can waken up the sleeping hair follicles which boost the growth of hair.” Livestrong.com suggests to, “Add 2 tablespoons of cinnamon, 2 tablespoons of honey and 1 egg. Stir well with a fork to combine the ingredients. Beware if your olive oil is too warm; it may start to cook the egg. While the cinnamon and honey both promote hair growth, the protein and lecithin in the egg strengthen your strands.”

4.Cleanse Hair

Honey can be used with your shampoo to make your hair extra clean and give rid of any buildup. Youqueen.com says, “The antiseptic and anti-bacterial qualities of honey keep the scalp clean. It also prevents fungal infection or psoriasis on the scalp. This further reduces the risk of developing dandruff and itchy scalp.” Stylecraze.com suggests, “To give your hair a regular boost of honey benefits, mix a teaspoon of honey with your shampoo and apply to your scalp and hair. Work it to lather and let it sit for two minutes or so and then, rinse it off.

If your hair is thin from coloring it, heat styling or you were just born with it, here are 5 tips and tricks for making your thin hair look thicker.

Upside-Down Blow Out

When blow drying your hair, in order to make it look thicker and to add volume, blow dry your hair upside down. Flip your head upside down and blow dry at the roots to add lots of volume. Tip: Let your hair air dry for 20-30 minutes; don’t blow dry dripping wet hair.

Use Volumizing Mousse

When your hair is wet or damp, use a volumizing mousse to add volume and to give the appearance of thicker hair. Birchbox.com says to focus on the roots by, “Before blow-dying hair, prep with a lightweight mousse (it's come a long way since the 80s). Next, use a large rounded brush to pull sections of your hair up from the root, aiming your blow-dryer at your scalp for maximum lift.”

Wash out Conditioner

It is important that you wash out all over the conditioner you put on your ends. Womenshealthmag.com says, “Conditioner is an essential step towards healthy, full hair, but if you’re not rinsing out all of the product before you’re out of the shower, it can weigh your hair down, making it look flat and a little bit greasy. If your hair still feels slippery when you rinse out conditioner, you haven’t rinsed it all out.” So make sure you are using a conditioner for thin hair. Tip: After you condition your hair rinse your hair with cold water, not only will this help remove the conditioner but it will also add tons of shine.

Layer your hair

An easy way to have the allusion of thick hair is to add layers to your hair.  Getting layers will frame your face as well as add volume to your hair. Stylelist.com says, “The next time you head to your salon to get your hair cut, give layers a try. By layering sections of hair, a texturized look is created which gives off the sense of thicker hair.”

Curl your ends

When you straighten your hair and it’s thin or the ends are damaged it might not look so good. So switch it up by curling your hair or just straightening the top and curling the ends. Womenshealthmag.com says, “In general, flat ironing makes hair look a bit thinner because it flattens out any body in your hair, but if you’re flat ironing the ends and making them absolutely stick straight, it makes the rest of your hair look super thin (especially if your ends are dead). Instead, curl the ends inward just a bit to give your hair more volume, making hair look fuller and thicker.”
