Long, beautiful, healthy hair is the desire. Brushing, straightening, adding countless products is the reality. If you want perfectly styled hair that is also healthy and strong, you may feel at a loss for a solution. Hair breakage is the consequence of constant washing, styling, and exposure to the elements. But, don’t give up yet! We’ll give you six ways to reverse hair damage and keep your locks looking silky and smooth.

1. Avoid the heat! Heat damage caused by curling irons, straightening irons, and blow dryers will do major damage to your hair. Now that the warm weather is approaching, opt for air drying. If you simply can’t live without your blow dryer, cut down your usage. If you can’t resist styling tools, the next best thing is to apply a product before you style.
2. Cosmopolitan.com suggests using a hydrating cream to shield your hair from the damage. They also mention coating the hair in a botanical oil solution and leaving it in overnight.
3. With the summer coming, another useful tip to prevent hair breakage is to avoid overexposure to the sun! If you’re enjoying a day at the beach, bring along a hat or a scarf in order to cover your hair. Exposure to the sun causes dry, brittle hair, which can lead to breakage.
4. Hot-oil treatment is the next solution.  LiveStrong.com suggests buying an at-home kit or going to the salon to get the procedure done. The oils penetrate into the hair follicles and restore lost moisture, which is exactly what dried out hair needs.
5. Naturallycurly.com suggests using a leave-in conditioner in order to moisture and restore your strands. The conditioner coats the hair and locks in moisture to keep it silky and smooth.
6. Last but not least, sticking to a healthy diet is a must! Foods filled with plenty of vitamins and minerals will keep your hair nourished and strong. Beauty comes from the inside, so make sure your body is healthy and hydrated!

Women love to dye their hair, but what happens when they become pregnant? This controversial topic has left pregnant women puzzled and filled with questions. We wanted to explore this topic and do some research of our own to give you some insight on the facts and risks of dyeing your hair while you are pregnant.

According to Roger W. Harms, M.D., obstetrician and medical editor-in-chief of Mayo Clinic, and American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), small amounts of hair dye CAN penetrate your skin, but it is too small to cause any harm to the developing baby. Even though there have been numerous studies over the past few years and evidence suggests it is safe, doctors advocate that women wait until after their first trimester to dye their hair because the first trimester is when the baby’s major organs are forming. Justmommies says, so far, there has been no evidence proving birth defects from hair dyes, but we are still not 110% sure of its safety.

American Pregnancy Association says that one concern they have is not the absorption of the dye through the skin, but the strong chemical fumes that mothers will be inhaling while dyeing their hair. They recommend avoiding hair dyes with any ammonia because it is a dangerous chemical fume. Also, NHS Choices reminds us that pregnancy can affect your normal hair condition. For instance, your hair could have a different reaction to coloring than before you were pregnant and/or your hair could have become more or less absorbent, frizzy, or unpredictable.

If you do decide to dye your hair while pregnant, here are some guidelines and precautions to consider from the FDA and the American Pregnancy Association:

  1. Follow package directions explicitly and carefully.
  2. Always wear gloves when applying chemicals.
  3. Leave the dye on your hair no longer than directed.
  4. Rinse your scalp and hair thoroughly with water after the treatment.
  5. Make sure you are in a well-ventilated area.
  6. Test the hair dye for allergic reactions before applying it to your entire scalp and hair.

Some safety tips and alternative solutions Justmommies suggests is to pick a hair dye that will stay on your scalp for the least amount of time as possible, try highlighting or frosting your hair instead because the chemicals are not applied directly to your scalp which means less hair dye will be absorbed through your scalp/skin, and use natural hair dyes such as henna. Because henna is a vegetable dye, it is considered to be safer to use during pregnancy.

The bottom line is, we have limited data and there have not been enough studies regarding pregnant women and hair dyes to be completely convinced on its safety. So far, there have been no signs of dangers related to hair dyes and baby development, but just because there have been no errors, does not mean they can’t show up in future studies.

If you are still concerned and uncertain about the use of hair dye during pregnancy, please discuss this with your health care provider for a medical opinion. At the end of the day, dyeing your hair while you are pregnant is a personal choice; just make sure you know the facts and risks!

These pesky, white flakes of dead skin are the least bit attractive, and unfortunately, 50% of us know all about it. Dandruff makes us insecure, scratch our scalps like crazy, and we can forget about wearing that black sweater.  Luckily, dandruff is treatable and they’re a number of ways to take care of it.

Here’s our 7 easy and manageable tips to beat those nasty demons once and for all.

1. Go for the obvious! We all heard of Head & Shoulders and Selsun Blue before. These medicated shampoos contain antifungal agents and antimicrobials. Dandruff forms from a yeast-like fungus on the scalp. Recommendation: Limit use of Selsun Blue to only a couple times a week, it can be a bit strong for everyday use.

2. Try washing with a mild, non-medicated shampoo. Not all dandruff is caused by fungus, sometimes the scalp is just dried out.  These shampoos help allow the scalp retain natural oils on skin.

3. ACV! Apple Cider Vinegar. The miracle product of natural remedies. Providing answers to an endless amount of skin, health, and beauty problems. ACV is loaded with potassium and enzymes that help a dry, flakey, and itchy scalp.  Put an equal part with water into a spray bottle and soak the scalp. Let it sit for about 30 minutes and rinse. Do this treatment twice a week.  This may come with a strong odor but isn’t that better than a blizzard flying off our scalp?

4. Oil Treatments. There are numerous oils that can be massaged onto the head. Olive oil is a common ingredient in hair products.  Let it sit overnight then wash it out in the morning.  Other oils have a similar effect.  You can also substitute olive oil with coconut, jojoba, or almond oil.

5. Try washing your hair with a tree oil shampoo. This oil serves as a natural antiseptic and used to treat a number of conditions such as dandruff, acne, canker sores, scabies, and candida.  Since some dandruff cases are cause by yeast overgrowth, it makes sense to use tea tree oil.  Massage a few drops on your scalp or add some to your current shampoo.

6. Limit your use of styling products. If using more than handful, try to cut a few out or cut down the times you use them.  Hair products have a ton of chemicals and ingredients that can disrupt the ph balance, mess with the oil production, or irritate the scalp.  Focus use of styling products for big nights out on the town, not every day.

7. Seek a dermatologist. If you tried treating dandruff with the over the counter products and the natural remedy route with no luck, it may be time to get professional help.  A doctor can run test and be able to tell you exactly what your dandruff is caused from.  That way they can give you a more accurate way of treating or prescribe medical strength products.

Even though battling those flakes is not easy, it is manageable. Don’t give up the fight! Try these tips and you will be wearing your dark clothing in no time.

For those of us whose lifelong goal is to have long hair, you know what I am talking about when I say it is not an easy objective. We try everything from not getting it cut to cutting it every month to help it to grow. However, there is a simpler solution many of us are unaware of. It is what our doctors have been telling us since we were in preschool. We need to take our vitamins!

Biotin is a supplement that is known to help hair grow long and strong. It is a water-soluble B-complex vitamin that increases our hair’s growth rate. Taking an amount of 5000 mcg daily is the recommended amount. However, we cannot get our hopes up thinking we will have hair like Princess Rapunzel’s the next morning. Beauty takes time, and so does hair growth. It usually takes a month or two to see results, but once it shows, there are no regrets. Not only does it help our hair to grow, but also we will see our skin looking healthier, and growth in our nails and eye lashes as well. No complaints there!

 Also, Vitamins C, E, and A are factors in hair growth. Vitamin C improves scalp circulation that has an effect on hair growth. To gain vitamin C, fruits and vegetables especially, cantaloupe, strawberries, tomatoes, and broccoli are all foods that have a large amount of vitamin C. Vitamin E helps leverage the body’s immune system. This results in hair growth seen in foods such as, nuts, seeds, eggs, seafood, and oils. Vitamin A is also benefits healthy hair, skin, and nails. However, taking too much will cause the opposite effect. Consuming green, yellow, and orange vegetables, cantaloupes, and apricots will help you acquire a good amount of vitamin A.

There is no harm in taking vitamins. They are what allow our bodies to grow healthy and strong. By taking these vitamins above, we will not only be helping our body as a whole, but allowing the proper nutrients and vitamins to assist our hair to grow long, strong, and healthy. So for those of us who want to add a couple more inches to our hair, vitamins will do the trick!

Anyone who's colored their own hair has heard about this. It’s one of the most common problems we come across. It’s that annoying line of residue that gets left around your hairline. Here are our 5 tips to avoid getting this line in the first place...

1. Wear plastic gloves: This will keep your fingers and hands stain free.

2. Wrap a towel around your neck. Use a clip so it stays nice and tight: This prevents the dye  from running down your neck, causing unpleasant stains.

3. Apply a thick cream or petroleum jelly and coat the hairline. Imagine it as a wall of protection or barrier. Don’t forget to go around your ears too!

4. Wear a long sleeve shirt. You are better off covering as much skin as possible: This will protect your shoulders and arms.

5. If dye does drip onto your skin wipe it off IMMEDIATELY with hydrogen peroxide to prevent staining.

If you have oily hair, you are probably annoyed with the constant struggle of making it look clean and presentable. Grease can weigh down your hair, making it look flat and causing it to be difficult to style. With a few simple solutions, you can have your locks looking and feeling fresh.

You can start to eliminate the oil problem even before shampooing. Marie Claire says using a boar-bristle brush can begin to break up oil and build-up that is left in your roots.

Livestrong suggests using a clear shampoo to avoid extra residue. When your hair is oily, you should wash it at least once a day. Also, apply conditioner to your ends only, so that it doesn’t add extra weight or product to your roots. You can even use detangling spray in lieu of conditioner to avoid the weightiness it may cause.

Lemon-distilled water is also suggested as a way to rinse the hair after shampooing. You can easily make this solution by squeezing the juice of two lemons into a quart of distilled water.

Self mentions using dry shampoo spray. This product is great if you’re in a rush and the events of your day have caused your hair to become greasy. The ingredients within the spray soak up extra oil and add volume to the hair. They also using suggest root lifters, which contain alcohol, in order to rid the strands of excess grease.

Although oily hair may seem like a pain, there are numerous ways to solve the greasy problem.
