Who knew that there were so many household products that we use on a daily basis that can be used on your hair. Here are 8 strange hair tips that totally work!

1. Toothbrush:

A toothbrush can be used on the hair in two different ways. The first way is fake fuller hair on thin hair. More.com suggests, “Tousle the hair from root to crown with your fingertips as you blow-dry. Then, when your strands are dry, give the roots extra lift by back-combing their undersides with a clean, dry toothbrush. Rather than tearing at hair like a comb, the soft bristles will grip and rough up strands just enough to maintain lift.” The second way to use a toothbrush on your hair is to spray it with hairspray to tame flyaways.

2. Paper towels:

When your hair is wet, instead of drying it with a towel, use paper towels to avoid frizz. More.com says, “The paper won’t create as much friction as a towel, so your hair ends up less frizzy. It also absorbs more water than a cloth towel, really speeding up your drying time.”

3. Dryer Sheets:

Don’t you hate those days where your hair just won’t cooperate and you can tame the static. Dryer sheets are the solution to that problem, they help tame hair static. Alllwomenstalk.com says, “Dryer sheets take static out quickly and leave your hair smelling great. It's only a temporary fix though, so if it's a particularly dry winter day, be sure to stash a few in your purse! Open the dryer sheet completely, grab a fairly large section of hair and run the sheet from the scalp to the bottom of the strand.”

4. Paper Bag:

If you want to curl your hair but don’t want to use heat or don’t have a curling iron handy, a paper bag can do the trick. Bellasugar.com says, “"Paper bag" curls work on the same principle as rag curls. You just tear a big paper grocery bag into strips, and then roll your towel-dried or slightly dampened hair up in them. You can sleep on them or, for faster results, blow-dry and then spritz with hair spray.”

5. Tomato Ketchup:

Using Ketchup on Blonde hair can fix problems with chlorine related issues or a bad hair dye experience. Huffingtonpost.com says, “Blonde ladies can counteract green shades and rejuvenate their colour with the help of tomato ketchup. While it may not be the most appealing hair treatment, the red condiment can neutralize the green in your hair, leading to shiny, golden locks once more. Apply the tomato ketchup to hair and leave on for 20 minutes, then rinse off and shampoo as normal.”

6. Vodka:

Vodka can be used to tame frizzy hair and add shine to your hair. Health.com says, “Because it has a low pH, vodka can help de-frizz your strands. 7. Deodorant:

You can use deodorant on your hairline for those days where you are really hot and you need your hair to stay nice. Xojane.com says, “A thin layer of clear deodorant around my hairline and down my neck while I’m dry has saved many a hairstyle. See also: It can help keep your hair from sticking to your neck in bed.”Who would have thought something you put on your armpit is good for your hair also.

8.Cool Whip:

 if your hair is extra dry and needs to be brought back to life, use cool whip to condition dry locks. Tootsiez.com suggests to, “Apply Cool Whip to dry hair, let sit for thirty minutes, then rinse well and shampoo.  The coconut and palm kernel oils in Cool Whip condition hair for a luxurious shine.” This tasty topping will not only make a sundae taste good but it will make your hair moisturized and shiny.

A French Braid, like the top knot is an easy way to get your hair out of your face, as well as a fun way to switch it up from a boring ponytail. You can style a French braid in several ways. Headband Side Bun

Using a headband at the gym can really help get your hair out of your face as well as keep it away. Huffingtonpost.com says, “To protect your hair from breakage caused by tight elastics and hairpins, try holding the hair back from the face and shoulders with a handkerchief or cloth headband. This will limit breakage and will eliminate dents.” You can use a headband with any hairstyle you choose, it is a good gym accessory to have. After you put the headband on, scoop the rest of your hair up and put it in a side bun for an easy gym hairstyle.

Fishtail Braid

A fishtail braid will secure your hair in place so it doesn’t fall out as you’re working out. It is really easy to achieve, click here for a video tutorial! A fishtail differs from a normal braid because you are only using two sections of hair to create the braid instead of three.  Dailymakeover.com says, “Loose side braids can fall out while working out. Instead, opt for a tight fishtail that’s funkier and will last throughout your training session.”

High Bubble Braid

A high bubble braid will really spruce up any boring high pony. It is really easy to create. All you have to do it create a high pony tail and then halfway down the pony use another elastic to tie off that section and then a few inches down repeat the same step. Thechalkboardmag.com says, “This style is fool-proof, and is sure to put some pep in your step and bounce on your head.”

DIY Hair Mask

For this mask you will need 2 avocados that are peeled and pitted and 1 tbsp of Macadamia Nut oil. You can either mix them in a bowl together or put them in a blender. You should apply this mask after you shampoo your hair in the shower. Rub and massage the mixture all over your hair. Leave it on for 10-15 minutes and then wash out. Your hair should feel soft so you don’t need to use conditioner as well.

When your hair is over processed, dry, brittle and looks fried, you have a problem. The problem is your hair is damaged and needs to be brought back to life. I can tell you from personal experience that trying to repair damaged hair can take a while; there is no overnight cure for damaged hair. Making your hair healthy is a gradual process and is one you need to commit to. Here are 8 helpful tips for healing damaged hair!

  1. Use healthy hair products: Stop using the cheap stuff and buy shampoo and conditioner that will moisturize dry and damaged hair. If you get sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner that’s a plus. Wikihow.com says, “Avoid shampoo and conditioner made with sodium laurel or laureth sulfates. These are industrial cleaning agents added to many soaps and shampoos; they clean your hair, but they also strip it of its natural protective oils in the process.” Also use oil to bring your hair back to life.   2. Use Semi-permanent dye: If you can’t stop yourself from dying your hair, switch to a semi-permanent hair dye. It not as harsh or damaging to your hair.   8. Let your hair breathe: Give your hair a break from all the products and hot tools. Try to make a weekly routine of how and what you are going to do to your hair. Being prepared for the day will make your morning routine shorter. If you are daring enough challenge yourself to use no heat or products for two weeks or even a month. I’m telling you, you will see a major change in your hair. Tip: if you are going to put your hair in a ponytail or braid the looser the better. If your hair is too tightly wound in a braid or pony it could cause breakage.

Split ends are a pain; everyone deals with them at one point or another no matter what type of hair they have. Let’s be realistic the only way to truly rid your hair of split ends is to cut them off. But there are several things you can do to prevent getting them as well as repair them for a period of time.

How do you get split ends?

Wikihow.com says, “Split ends occur when hair becomes weak and begins to break near the end of the hair shaft. Environmental stressors such as the sun, heat and the use of harsh styling products contribute to the number of split ends. Other factors such as poor diet and brushing hair when it is wet also contribute.”

Here are several tips for preventing split ends:                

Get regular trims:

You can either do this yourself or go to a salon. If you do this yourself, I suggest you buy a good pair of hair scissors and not use scissors you use on paper. Stylelist.com says, “The longer you wait to trim, the greater chance you have of split ends worsening and traveling up the shaft. It may sound counter-intuitive, but this is why it's actually best to get frequent trims if you're trying to grow longer, healthier hair.” Depending on how split your ends are, you should trim your hair every 6-8 weeks.

Use alcohol-free products:

 Alcohol-free products are less harsh on your hair and won’t cause your ends to dry out. Livestrong.com says, “When products containing alcohol are applied to your hair, the alcohol evaporates very quickly. The problem is that it takes a bit of your hair's natural moisture with it, leading to dry, lifeless locks that create the need for using more products on them and, of course, even drier hair.” So next time you are shopping for new hair products look for ones that say alcohol-free, your hair will look and feel a thousand times better!

Use less heat:

Let’s be realistic; saying use no heat on your hair is almost impossible for some people. I’ve tried and failed many times. So the simple solution to that is use less heat. Instead of blow drying your hair, let it dry naturally and then use a heat protectant and whatever hot tool you want. 7beautytips.com says, “Heat is the worst enemy for your hair but it’s hard to completely avoid hair dryers and flat iron. It is best to apply a heat resistant serum to your hair before using heat. Towel dry your hair before drying, this way you minimize the damage of heat on wet hair. Also, use flat irons and curlers occasionally instead of everyday.”

Always condition your ends:

If your hair is dry you can skip the shampoo but never skip conditioner. You should only condition your hair from the beginning of your pony to the ends of your hair. Sparkpeople.com says to, “Condition your hair every time you wash it, and use a deep conditioner at least once a month. Use a leave-in conditioner on the ends of your hair for added moisture and protection.”

Don’t brush wet hair:

You should avoid at all costs brushing wet hair with the same brush you use on dry hair. It won’t only cause more split ends but it will cause breakage. Totalbeauty.com suggests avoiding brushing your hair at all when it wet. But if you can’t help it, replace your hair brush with a wide tooth comb. Stylelist.com suggests, “After you apply conditioner in the shower, slowly run a wide-tooth comb through hair until all the tangles are out. This prevents the snaps and breakage you can incur when you try to brush out hair that is roughed up from a towel-dry.”

Hair Brush Cleaner:

Baking Soda has properties that are great for cleaning brushes and combs without doing any damage to your hair. The Huffingtonpost.com suggests to, “Place one cup of lukewarm water and one tablespoon of baking soda in a bowl. Then gently use your fingers to wash your hair brushes and combs in the sudsy mixture. Rinse with water and lay brushes and combs flat to dry.”

DIY Dry Shampoo:

Baking soda can be used as a dry shampoo, so you don’t have to wash your hair in the shower every day. You can either put some baking soda into a container with wholes at the opening or you can pour 1/8 of a cup into your hand. Then distribute the baking soda throughout your hair. Then brush or comb your hair until the baking soda is no longer visible. Then style your hair normally!

When styling your hair with a flat iron, there are several things you should know! Here are some helpful tips for using a flat iron.

  • Right size: It is important that you use a flat iron that fits your hair length and type perfectly. If your iron isn’t the right size for your hair length and type it could cause more damage to your hair. Allwomenstalk.com suggests, “Your hair length and type should determine the size of your flat iron. Narrow plates that run ½”-1” are good for short hair that is fine or thick. 1 ½ -2” plates work well for long hair that’s fine or thick.”
  • Make sure your hair is DRY: This is extremely important! You should never run your flat iron over wet or damp hair. You will fry your hair if your iron it when it is wet. If you want to damage your hair that’s the easiest way to do it. After you blow dry your hair, turn your blow dryer from hot to cold and blast your hair with cool air. Then use the flat iron to style hair.
  • Use a heat protectant: This tip is mentioned in many blog posts because it is so important. Protecting your hair with a heat protectant can make a HUGE change in the way you hair looks and feels. Allwomentstalk.com says, “Regularly using a heat protectant on your hair before you use your straightening iron or other heat tools is a must. Skipping this step can result in dry, fried hair and no one has time for that!”
  • Right Temperature: Just as it is important to have the right size iron for your hair, you need to use the right temperature on your hair. The temperature depends on your hair type and how healthy or damaged your hair is. Huffingtonpost.com says, “My hair should only be ironed at a low setting, below 300 degrees, as it is fine and damaged (the same goes for chemically treated hair). Normal hair can be ironed at 300-380 and thick, coarse or extra curly hair at 350-400. Start at a lower level and increase as needed.”
  • Buy the right iron: A good flat iron will have a temperature setting, if there is only one setting you should stay away from that kind of iron.  A good temperature range should be from 175-400 degrees, but I highly recommend that you NEVER set your iron to 400 degrees. You don’t want to burn your hair off.
  • Separate into sections: When flat ironing your hair weather your straightening it or curling it, it is a good idea you separate you hair into smaller sections with a clip. There is no exact way to do it, just separate you hair as you like and then style each section.

Last week we gave you tips on how to managing oily hair, here are some DIY home remedies for getting rid of oily hair!

1.Acidic Rinse: 

Howstuffworks.com suggests, “One way to decrease the oil is to rinse with diluted vinegar or lemon juice after shampooing. Add two tablespoons white vinegar to one cup water, or mix the juice of one lemon (strained) with one cup water. Rinse the mixture through your hair, and then rinse your hair with warm water.” This can help get rid of build up as well as fix your oily locks.

2.Cornstarch or Cornmeal:

There are ingredients in cornstarch and cornmeal that can get rid of oily hair. Womensday.com suggests, “Pour 1 Tbsp cornmeal or cornstarch into an empty salt or pepper shaker and sprinkle onto dry hair and scalp until you’ve used it all. After 10 minutes, use a paddle hairbrush to completely brush it out. Treatment can be applied every other day.”

3.Beer Rinse:

If you don’t have a problem putting beer on your hair, then go for this home remedy. Allwomenstalk.com says, “The malt and hops found in beer are incredibly good for your hair. They will leave your hair feeling a lot softer and less prone to tangling. The Apple Cider Vinegar is added to help wash away all the product build up coating your hair.” All you need is 1 cup of beer and ¼ cup of apple cider vinegar. Mix them together and pour on your hair after you shampoo. Let it sit in your hair for 5 minutes and then wash out with warm water.

4.Lemon and Egg Rinse:

Mix two egg yolks and 1 cup of diluted lemon juice together in a bowl (the juice of one lemon mixed with 1 cup of water). Apply this to wet hair and then wash it out with warm water.

5.Yogurt and Baking Soda Rinse:

For this rinse you will need 5 tbsp of plain yogurt, 1 tbsp of Baking Soda and 1 tbsp of lemon juice. According to Allwomenstalk.com, “Mix yogurt, baking soda and lemon juice together. Apply to hair especially thoroughly at the roots. Let it sit on your hair for 30-40 minutes then rinse. Do not use more than once per week.”

6.Rosemary Tea Rinse:

Rosemary contains oils that will help stop the overproduction of oil on your scalp. Readersdigest.ca suggests, “To make the rinse, pour 1 cup boiling water over 2 tablespoons dried rosemary. Steep for 20 minutes, strain, cool, and pour into an empty plastic bottle. Keep the bottle in the shower and splash your hair with the tea after each shampoo.”

7.Mouth Wash and Witch Hazel Rinse:

In a small cup mix together some witch hazel and whatever mouth wash you please. Readersdigest.ca says, “Both ingredients are astringents, which means they help tighten skin pores as they dry. Dip a cotton swab in the solution, then dab the swab on your scalp (not your hair) after you finish shampooing and rinsing.”

  5. Bobby Pins stay in place: If you have that problem where your bobby pins don’t stay in place and your hair is starting to look crazy, here is the solution. First is you should know how to correctly use bobby pins, Allwomenstalk.com says, “Bobby pins should be placed in your hair with the zig-zag side down, against your scalp and the flat part showing. This helps the pin to grasp and hold.” Then lightly spray your bobby pins with dry shampoo and then place them in your hair.

  • Switch up your part: If you usually wear your part in the middle, changing it to a side part could instantly add some volume to your hair.
  • Don’t fry your hair: Always Always Always use a heat protectant on your hair before any heat styling. Using one will really protect your ends from getting fried as well as from breakage.
  • Never be without bobby pins: Put some extra bobby pins in your bag for emergency situations. Beautyhigh.com says, “Some mornings when you leave your house your hair can look amazing, and then a rainstorm hits. To make sure you’re never without bobby pins, stash 10 or so in the coin purse of your wallet.” It is always good to carry them with you just in case you have hair that won’t stay put.

  • Find the right hair accessories: If you are having a bad hair day, having a headband or beanies could make a huge difference. Try and find hair accessories that can go with any outfit and look good with any hair style.
  • Easy way to tame flyaway’s: Spray a tooth brush with hairspray and brush those flyaway’s into place. Using the toothbrush won’t be as harsh on your hair and won’t make your hair feel stiff.
  • Texture Spray: Try using a sea salt spray to add texture to your hair. Beautyhigh.com says, “Textured hair (or dirty hair) is much easier to work with because it holds style better. On days when your hair needs to be put in a braid, bun or ponytail, the style will hold all day long if you use a spray first.”
