Sunshine and water are two things that are hard to avoid in the summer time. Being oustide, going on hikes, tanning by the pool, swimming in the ocean, these are just a few of the activities everybody loves doing in the summer. If you didn't already know, sun and chlorine can be damaging to hair but don't let that keep you inside all summer long. We have come up with a list of ways that you can help protect your hair in the summer while enjoying and embracing the beautiful outdoors! 

  • Do not shampoo your hair before swimming in chlorine! If you know the day before that you are going to be spending the day by the pool, refrain from washing your hair that night. Chlorine will strip away all of the protective oils that your hair has built up exposing it to the chemicals found in pool water. If you don't wash your hair before jumping in the pool your hair will be somewhat protected from damage. If you are the type of person who feels their hair is always greasy don't wash it anyway, you're going in the water so what is the point of styling your hair? Don't be afraid to just throw your hair up in a messy bun or wear a hat! You are going to want to keep your hair out of your face since it is hot out so do your hair some good by not washing it! 
  • This brings us to our next tip, wear your hair up! Slicking your hair back into a ponytail is doing less damage to your hair when you're out in the sun. By doing this you are protecting your scalp from being burnt by the sun. Aim for hair styles like loose buns or ponytails, these will cause less breakage because you aren't putting too much stress on your hair. Also alternate the position of your up do each day, this will also release some stress to your hair by not pulling on the same strands repeatedly. Before going to bed or while relaxing inside wear your hair down. Since you are indoors the sun can't cause any damage. By letting your hair down you will give your hair the break it needs.
  • Don't overuse your hair products. Overusing hairspray, oil, shampoo, etc. can dry out your hair. The sun is already doing a pretty good job of that so don't add to the damage! By constantly adding product to your hair you are causing the strands to become dry and delicate. 
  • Keep hydrated! Drinking lots of water and other cooling liquids will only be good for your hair and your body! There's nothing better than lying by the pool and sipping on something refreshing! A great and fun way to keep hydrated is by adding fresh fruits or vegetables to your water! The flavors of fruit will infuse the water and make your drink even more delicious! Drink as much water as you can through out the day because it will keep your hair and skin from drying out as much.
  • Get your hair cut in the beginning of the summer! If it hasn't gotten too hot yet then prepare yourself by getting a trim before the sun starts to come out. If your hair has any dead ends trim them before summer has officially begins to prevent any extra damage. If your hair is already in bad shape then the sun will only add to this damage. By the end of the summer you might have to cut off more hair then you were planning on so take caution before hand. If you get a haircut at the beginning of summer your hair will be healthy, and any damage that occurs after will not leave your hair in a condition where you have to spend all of fall and winter trying to repair. 
  • Purchase a hydrating shampoo and conditioner! Extra hydration will do your hair some good when you've been out in the sun all day. Look for products that DON'T contain any harsh sulfates, parabens or sodium chloride. These ingredients will weigh down your hair making it appear flat.
  • Just like you need to intake a lot of water to keep hydrated, you also want to apply water to your hair to keep it hydrated to! A trick we learned about includes spraying water on your hair before going in the pool or ocean. You don't want to drench your hair but just spray enough water to dampen it, this will add an extra layer of coating to your hair. That extra layer will protect your hair from absorbing all of the chlorine and salt water. All you need to do is fill up a spray bottle with cold water. You can place it in your beach bag and take it with you whenever you will be going to the pool or beach. This way you will always be prepared and so will your hair!
  • Use UV-shielding products and apply them to damp hair! By applying protective products to damp hair rather than dry, you are allowing the product to absorb fully into your hair. If you wait until your hair has fully dried to use any UV-shielding products then it will just sit on the surface of your hair and won't sink in, not allowing it to actually protect your it.
  • Brush your hair with care! Brushing your hair when it is wet does more damage than good. So instead of immediately detangling any knots wait until your hair is fully dry. Then, instead of using a brush gently run through your hair with a wide tooth comb. Hair is very delicate so you want to go easy when your combing it, this will prevent any additional damage!

This post may seem a little strange to some because gluten is a protein found in the foods that we eat, and hair dye isn't exactly something we want to be putting in our mouths. Even though hair dye isn't edible it is still something we are using on our body, and just because you are not eating the product doesn't mean you're not sensitive to it. Hair products that are gluten free can be rare to find since, like we said, you are not eating it. Gluten is a protein that is found in wheat, rye, barley, and oats. It is also found in many everyday products such as hair body and skin care, medicine, vitaimins, makeup, etc. Some people react topically to gluten on their skin, some have the topical form of celiac disease and often react to topical gluten, and some just like to keep gluten off their skin and out of site because they feel safer knowing that their skin won't accidentally absorb gluten. People with topical forms of gluten can be affected by products enhanced with gluten leaving their scalps itchy, burning or causing a rash. Love Your Color by CoSaMo is an all natural hair dye that gently blends away gray hair. Love Your Color is unique because it has no PPD, no ammonia and no peroxide. All three of these ingredients are harsh chemicals known for damaging hair. Some of you may not already know that most of these chemicals are used in permanent hair dye. We want to share with you why peroxide isn't good for your hair color, and also the benefits of using a hair dye that doesn't include peroxide in their ingredients. 

For starters, peroxide is a chemical used in dye to strip hair of any coloration, apparantly eliminating melanin from hair. Also, depending on how much peroxide is in the product that you are using, sulfur can be removed causing your hair to harden and lose weight. Peroxide may also have toxic effects on the nervous system, respiratory and digestive system at low doses.1 Looking at a product like Love Your Color which uses no peroxide, your hair will not have these same effects in fact, your hair will become shinier and have added volume.This type of product will not dry out your hair, it is a gentle alternative that will help your hair not hurt it.

According to Avant Gard The School, ammonia is one of the worst ingredients found in the beauty business today. Ammonia is a common ingredient found in many hair dyes, but if this chemical is damaging to the hair why are companies using it? If you don't already know, ammonia is an ingredient that is added into hair color in order to bust through the hair cuticle and deposit color. Consequences of using products with ammonia include damage to the hair cuticle, which ultimately degrades the hair's structural integrity.1 Using hair dyes that consist of ammonia will cause damage to your hair over time. At first you will have the hair color that you desired, but eventually the hair will start to become dry, brittle and unhealthy. You will notice your hair becoming frizzy and fragile. Not only is ammonia damaging to your hair but it may also be harmful to your body. According to the Department of Health and Human Services Effects of Ammonia include irritation to the following:

  • Nose
  • Throat
  • Respiratory System
  • Eyes
  • Skin

Non-permanent hair dyes will have no ammonia and other benefits as well. A product that doesn't have ammonia will be less damaging to your hair, safer and more reliable. Here are a list of benefits that we found on ammonia free products. 

  • Products that do not have ammonia are better for your hair because they do not have the same harsh side effects, making your hair overall healthier.2
  • It protects your skeletal skin which results in no burning or itching after you have dyed your hair. Sinusitis is responsible for pre-mature graying, the pungent smell of the hair dye may trigger this for your hair. 2
  • Products with no ammonia will add proteins and other vital nutrients to your hair. The use of ammonia raises the pH level of the hair to such a degree that it cannot get back to it's original pH after coloring. The hair cutical will also remain open during this process allowing the hair to lose protein and moisture.2 Love Your Color, which has no ammonia, will rejuvenate your hair apperance with the help of pathenol, proteins and vitamin e.
  • Ammonia free colors open up strands of the hair so that it can penetrate and deposit it's pigments.2

When using ammonia on the hair you are essentially just volunteering to damage your hair. Ammonia free products will change your color but won't ruin hair completely.

Many people may not actually know what PPD is or if it's in the hair products that they have been using currently or in the past. CoSaMo has created a hair dye that consists of no PPD, which makes this product beneficial to your health and your hair. According to DermNet Nz, Paraphenylenediamine, also known as PPD, is a chemical substance used in permanent hair dye, textile or fur dyes, dark colored cosmetics, photographic developer, photocopying and printing inks, black rubber, oils, greases, gasoline, etc. Hair coloring products that consist of PPD will usually come packaged with two bottles, one containing the PPD dye prep, the other being the developer or oxidizer. Love Your Color not only has no PPD but it's an easy one step dye kit that only comes with one bottle. Most of the time you will not know if you are allergic to PPD and this can be harmful to your body if you are using a dye that has this ingredient. 

Negatives of PPD on your body and your hair: PPD is a colorless substance that needs oxygen for it to develop color. If PPD can have side effects such as these on your body then imagine what it is doing when you apply it to your hair.

There are many products and other items that you can be packing for a day spent at the beach that will help keep your hair and body healthy! You always want to be prepared rather than not prepared so we have come up with a list of beach bag essentials that will help you to have the best beach day!

  1. Comb: Sea salt water leaves your hair looking naturally wavy but it also gives you plenty of knots and tangles! There have been plenty of times when I have showered after a day at the beach and spent at least 20 minutes trying to detangle my hair! To prevent this from happening to you bring a comb with you to the beach, it will save you a lot of time when you get home and all you want to do is jump into bed! 
  2. Leave-in conditioner: A lot of people don't realize that leave-in conditioner helps tremendously with knotty hair! It also helps with damaged hair. You want to make sure that you pack leave-in conditioner with you because if you try combing your hair without applying it your hair will break off, causing it to look frizzy. So after you've been in the water for a few hours and are cooling off apply the leave-in conditioner before combing your hair. Your hair will look much healthier and more glossy.
  3. Mini Dry Shampoo: If you have ever been to the beach with friends and have decided to go out afterwards then you'll definitely want to include this product in with your beach bag essentials! Dry shampoo helps with greasy and oily hair, and it also gives texture and volume. If you've been sweating on the beach all day then your hair is probably looking a bit greasy. If you apply dry shampoo to your scalp your hair will be left looking wavy from the salt water and voluminous from the dry shampoo!
  4. Extra ponytail holders/bobby pins: How many times have you been out somewhere and your ponytail holder breaks? Instead of freaking out because your hair is a mess just pack extra ponytail holders with you! Bringing extra can help you or maybe a friend when a wave has taken either of your scrunchies! If you're someone who has a lot of fly aways or baby hairs then also pack bobby pins. There small and light so they won't add weight to your bag and they'll help when it starts to get windy out! 
  5. Coconut Oil: Adding just a little bit of coconut oil to the ends of your hair will go a long way. You can also use a hair serum but coconut oil works just as good and you probably already own it in your kitchen! By just applying a little oil to your hair it will take away any dryness that the sun has caused to your hair and it will also leave it smelling great!
  6. Sunscreen/Chapstick: This is the most important product to bring with you to the beach! Not wearing sunscreen can harm your skin since the sun can have so many negative effects on your body. Make sure you are bringing sunscreen and chapstick that has SPF with you to the beach. Chapstick helps to keep your lips moisturized and the SPF helps them not to peel. Everybody wants a tan in the summer time but make sure you are being safe and treating your skin with the care that it needs!
  7. Makeup wipes: Makeup wipes are something you may want to bring with you to the beach if you are wearing any makeup. There have been so many times when I have gotten out of the water and ended up looking like a raccoon from my running mascara and eyeliner! Make sure you bring wipes so that you can touch up any running makeup due to sweating or the water!
  8. Baby Powder: Have you ever been yelled at by your mom or dad for getting sand in their car? The only downfall about going to the beach is getting sand EVERYWHERE. Baby powder is a great product because it takes the sand right off your body, I swear it's like magic! So right before you're about to get into your car apply the baby powder to your skin and all of the sand will fall right off your body. You will no longer have to spend money on a car wash after the beach just from using this product!
  9. Magazine/Book: Going to the beach gives you the time you need to relax and read! I recommend bringing either a magazine or book with you when you go to the beach because it will keep you entertained and get your brain flowing! There are so many good books so if you have had your eye set on a specific novel bring it with you to the beach it's a great setting for reading! 
  10. Food: Saved the best for last, food! When going to the beach instead of spending your money on pizza or french fries we recommend packing your own lunch. Eating healthy fats will help to protect your hair at the beach from the sun! Healthy fats condition your hair from the inside out leaving it soft, shiny, and not as dry. Avocado on toast is a great way to get in those healthy fats and it is really tasty as well! To make this particular lunch all you need to do is toast two pieces of bread (whichever kind you prefer) and then smash up one avocado on both slices. For the toppings you can add whatever you want based on what you like. I enjoy adding a pinch of both salt and pepper and a squeeze of lemon juice. Lemon juice actually helps the avocado from turning brown throughout the day, and it adds great flavor!

Going to the beach and laying by the pool in the summer are always fun times, but what about those days when the clouds come out and it starts pouring rain? Netflix in bed is always an option, but why not try a DIY spa day with your friends and family! Going to the spa for a day is definitely an expensive treat so why not recreate your own spa at home and enjoy it with a bunch of your friends! We have put together the perfect spa day for you and whoever you want to share a relaxing but fun day at home with! 

To help prepare you for this stress free day we have compiled a list of treatments and snacks that are not only inexpensive but super easy to make! 

Chocolate Facial Mask: Nothing tastes better than chocolate no matter what season it is so we had to include this chocolate face mask that will leave your skin smelling just as delicious! To make this mask that will leave your face feeling smooth and silky all you will need are these few ingredients:

  • 1/3 cup cocoa
  • 3 tbsp heavy cream
  • 2 tsp cottage cheese
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 3 tsp oatmeal powder

Once you've finished gathering all of these items mix all of them together in a bowl. Then, all that you need to do is smooth the mask onto your face, wait 10 minutes, and rinse with warm water!1

Aloe Vera Ice Cubes: Since you will be hosting your spa day in the summer you or your guests might have experienced a little too much time being out in the sun. If this is the case then this spa treatment will not only be super easy, but a great way to treat your sunburn! If you have ever gotten some type of burn in the past then you probably already own Aloe Vera. Aloe Vera is a gel-like juice that takes the sting and redness out of sunburn, and feels great on the skin after a long day at the beach! For this treatment you want to prepare at least a couple hours before any of your guests arrive. All you will have to do is squeeze the Aloe Vera into the empty cubes of an ice tray, and then place it in the freezer. Right before the treatment take the ice tray out and you will be left with cold cubes of Aloe Vera. Just rub the cubes on top of any burn and any pain you have been feeling from the sun will slowly fade away! This treatment is so easy and feels great!3

Cucumber and Lemon Water: If you have ever been to a spa in the past then you know that there is always a big jug of refreshing and tasty water in the waiting rooms. Cucumber and lemon are two ingredients that you can use in water that will taste fresh and delcious! This hydrating drink has so many benefits it provides extra vitamins and minerals to your diet, brings down blood pressure, fills you up when you're craving food, soothes the skin, it has antioxidents and detoxing properties, etc. A drink like cucumber and lemon water is not only healthy but helps you to feel more relaxed and stress free which is perfect for a summer time spa day! All you need to do the night before your spa day is fill a jug with ice, water, cucumber, slices of lemon, and mint (this is optional). If you don't happen to like either cucumber or lemon try using seasonal fruits it will taste just as delicious! The next morning the water will be infused with hints of cucumber, lemon and mint! This drink is great to serve over ice in mason jars, your guests will love it!2

DIY Hair Mask: Of course we needed to include a hair mask for a DIY spa day! This hair mask we found will leave your hair feeling soft, strong, and looking shiny which every girl loves! All you need for this treatment are these few ingredients:

  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1/4 of an avocado
  • 2 tbsp of olive oil
  • Small handful of conditioner 

Place all of these ingredients into a small jar or container and mix! Apply the mixture to your hair and relax for an hour or two, sip on the cucumber and lemon water while having girl talk and watching movies! When time is up wash out the mask and you'll notice that your hair looks so much better! This hair mask is great for the summer if the sun has done some damage to your hair!4

Sweet Lip Scrub: This next treatment is perfect if your lips happen to be peeling from the sun! To create this natural lip exfoliator all you need is:

  • 1 tbsp of white sugar 
  • 1 tsp raw cocoa powder
  • 1 tbsp raw honey

​Most likely you will already have these three ingredients in your home, and can get started on mixing them all together in a jar! Have your guests apply the scrub onto their lips for a minute or two. After, they can either wash or lick (it tastes good we promise) off the excess product. They'll be happy to notice that their lips are a lot less flakey and ten times smoother!4

Sunkissed Body Scrub: Everybody want to have glowing skin in the summer time and all you need to achieve this goal are these few ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup virgin coconut oil
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • One half of a lemon

To start this body scrub you'll first need to warm up a 1/2 cup of virgin coconut oil in the microwave. After, add in a 1/2 cup of brown sugar while squeezing in the lemon. Mix all of these ingredients together and apply the scrub all over your body! This is not only exfoliating, but leaves your skin looking super shiny which is perfect for a bikini body glow!4

Spa Snacks: Healthy and filling snacks to make for your spa day are finger sandwiches and watermelon salad! Finger sandwiches are great because you can make different versions that satisfy every guest's taste buds! A few of our favorites are salmon and cream cheese, cucumber and cream cheese, hummus and carrot, and for a sweeter taste strawberry and cream cheese. Most of the sandwiches we listed have cream cheese, but you can easily replace this ingredient with something else if you are not a fan! You can also use different types of bread such as whole wheat, rye, sourdough, etc. Be creative and have fun with it, let your friends create their own sandwiches and then try each others!

Watermelon Salad: You can also make watermelon salad which is super refreshing and a great treat to have in the summer! All you need to create this snack are these ingredients:

  • 2 tbsp white wine vinegar
  • 1 lime zested and juiced
  • 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil 
  • 1 red-onion thinly sliced
  • 4 cups of seeded watermelon 
  • 1 cup of crumbled feta cheese
  • 1/4 cup mint
  • 2 cups of baby arugula

*Remember that you may want to add more or less of these ingredients depending on how many people you are having attend your spa day!

To make the dressing for the salad you want to add the white wine vinegar, lime zest and juice to a small bowl. Whisk in the olive oil also adding a pinch of salt and pepper. Then add in the sliced red-onion letting it sit for 5-10 minutes. While waiting for the red-onion to marinate, add the watermelon, feta cheese, mint, and arugula to a salad bowl. When time is up drizzle the dressing on top of the other ingredients and toss! You are now ready to serve this delicious salad to all of your friends and enjoy!5

We have come up with a list of hair hacks that will make your life a little bit easier this summer! Bad hair days can be frustrating, but don't let your hair get the best of you! There are always solutions to fly aways or waking up late! Hopefully you can use some of these hacks when you need some help maintaining your hairstyle!

  • You didn't wash your hair last night and you wake up realizing you just ran out of dry shampoo. Don't worry there are many replacements that you can use that require no cost or trip to the drug store! We recommend using baby powder! Baby powder smells just as good as any dry shampoo and works the same, if not better! Apply just a little of the baby powder just as you would if you were using dry shampoo. Be careful though, baby powder is white so if you have dark hair make sure you're scrubbing the powder into your hair.
  • If you have ever dyed your own hair before then you know how hard it is not to stain your skin. Don't let the fear of dyeing your skin stop you from coloring your own hair! If you happen to get some dye on your skin the best way to get it off is by applying shampoo to the area of skin where there is dye. Gently scrub your skin using the shampoo and water, this should quickly remove any dye!
  • If you're in the midst of growing your hair out but still want that long ponytail look here is a way to fake it! Create two sections in the back of your head as if you were making two ponytails instead of one. Make sure that one of the ponytails is higher and hiding the second one. This should create the look of a longer looking ponytail. 
  • If you wake up one morning and your baby hairs are going in all different directions don't freak out! Somewhere in your house you probably have an extra tooth brush. Apply hairspray to the bristles of the tooth brush then gently comb out your baby hairs in the direction that you desire. Your hair should be looking sleek in no time!
  • Sick and tired of having straight hair? At night, after getting out of the shower braid your wet hair. When you wake up the next morning don't take the braids out just yet! Spray heat protectant to the braid and then go over it a few times with your straightener. After, do your makeup, make your bed, eat breakfast, etc. Before you leave the house take your hair out of the braid and you will be left with fresh beachy waves! 
  • Woke up late for work and don't have time to get ready for your meeting? Comb your hair and put it into a high ponytail. After, curl only the pieces that are in the pony tail, then take your hair out. You will be left with hair that looks as if you just got a blowout and it only takes ten minutes! 
  • If your hair is looking flat to your head try blow drying your hair in the opposite direction of your natural part. When you're finished part your hair back to however you like to wear it and you should have added volume!
  • If your bobby pins aren't staying in place try spraying them with hairspray or dry shampoo and your hair will hold all day long!
  • If you want lighter hair in the summer time no need to use bleach or any other harsh chemicals. Try squirting lemon juice to the strands of your hair before laying out by the pool or going to the beach. By the end of the day your hair will be looking sunkissed!
  • If you want to change up your hair color this summer but you don't want to use anything permanent, use different colors of chalk to add streaks of blue or pink to your hair! You can rock a new color each day!

The school year has ended which means you may have more time to focus on pampering yourself. Many women have the same question when it comes to talking about their hair, that is how do you grow it out?   1. Stay away from heat: This is the hardest but most important step! When you use hot tools on your hair every day the damage starts to build up because you are constantly burning the hair.   10. Refrain from brushing you hair: A lot of women tend to immediately brush their hair when getting out of the shower. Brushing your hair too much can cause damage and eventually lead to breakage. When you get out of the shower try letting your hair fully dry, and then use a comb instead of a brush to get out any knots or tangles. Limiting the amount of times you brush your hair during the day will help with growth and the overall health of your hair!

The best part about summer is being able to finally go to the beach, relax, spend time with friends and family, and of course go in the water! The ocean water is great to cool off in after being in the sun all day but it also leaves you with natural, effortless, wavy hair! Not using hot tools is the best solution to fixing damaged hair and that is why the ocean water is great, it leaves you with a fresh wavy hairstyle without spending the time using a curling iron! If you know your time spent this summer is going to be in a office instead of at the beach then try this DIY beach spray that we learned about from Elle.com.

The ingredients that you'll need to recreate the look of summer beach waves are: 

  • 1 spray bottle 
  • 1 cup hot water 
  • 1-2 tsp of sea salt
  • 1 tbsp coconut oil or aragan oil
  • 1/2 tsp of leave-in conditioner
  • Pomade or water-based gel

The Steps:

  1. Start with towel dried hair then add hot water to the spray bottle.
  2. Measure out all of your ingredients, keep in mind that if you want more waves you can add as much sea salt as you desire.
  3. Add all of the ingredients into the spray bottle in any order.
  4. Place the cap back on your spray bottle and shake up the ingredients for about a minute.
  5. While spraying the mixture into your hair start scrunching, this will help to form those loose waves.
  6. When your done try putting your hair into a loose braid until your hair is fully dry.
  7. Enjoy your summer beach waves without having to get wet!
