It’s hard to believe that there’s a wrong way to brush your hair but, apparently, there is. And, there’s not just one wrong way to brush your hair... there’s several! Here are a few hair brushing habits you may have that are seriously hurting your hair:

  • Brushing your hair from root to tip. It may seem unnatural to start at the tip when brushing your hair, but starting from the root of your hair can pull the hair out of the follicle and snap your hair!1

  • Brushing your hair when it’s wet. When your hair is wet it is weaker and more susceptible to breakage. Try to wait for your hair to dry before you start the detangling process!

  • Brushing too much. People used to say that brushing your hair 100 times before going to sleep would prevent breakage, but brushing your hair too much can actually lead to more breakage.

  • Using a dirty brush. Try not to use brushes full with hair, oils, or old residue from previously-used hair products. People don’t realize how important it is to clean their brushes!2

Throughout our everyday lives, maintaining our hair color can be quite the task. This applies even if your hair is not color treated!  This task is especially difficult during the summer months, because simply stepping out into the sun for too long can alter your hair color! For that reason, we are providing you with a few quick tips that will help you maintain your hair color.

  • Avoid Hot Water! It’s simple, really. Hot water can be damaging for any type of hair but if your hair is color treated, this is something you should be extra conscious of!1

  • If you haven’t colored your hair yet but are looking to in the near future, deep condition your hair! Doing so a week before getting your hair dyed will help your new color last longer!2

And most importantly…

  • Use SPF! Using a hair product with SPF in it protects your hair and helps you maintain color! Being exposed to the sun can fade hair color as well as make your hair dry!

To avoid harmful chemicals, reuse containers and save money, making your own body wash at home is a great option to have! Here are a few body wash recipes you can try:

  • Citrus Body Wash! Take 1 tablespoon shea butter, ¼ cup Aloe Vera gel, ¾ tablespoon guar gum, ¾ cup soap base, and 25 drops of essential oils. A mixture of orange, lemon and lime can be used for this recipe. To create this soap, melt shea butter over low heat, add Aloe Vera gel and warm it with the shea butter, add the gum and stir with a whisk. Then, add the soap base. After mixing it together well, allow the wash to settle for a few hours.1

  • Coconut Body Wash! Use ½ cup coconut milk, ⅔ cup castile soap, 3 tablespoons of vitamin e oil, 5 drops of essential oil and 2 tablespoons vegetable glycerin. For your essential oil, lavender is suggested. Combine all of these ingredients in a bottle, shake it, and then use it!2

  • Honey Body Wash! You will need ⅔ castile soap, ¼ cup of raw, unfiltered honey, 2 tablespoons of oil (grapeseed, jojoba, sweet almond, sesame, or olive), 1 tablespoon vitamin e oil, and 50-60 drops of essential oils. DIYNatural.com has a list of oil suggestions. Mix all of these ingredients into a squirt bottle, shake it up, and then it is ready to use!

If you’re suffering from dandruff, you’re not alone. But don’t scratch your head about it and make the problem worse! Try a few of our favorite natural dandruff remedies instead!

  • Vinegar! What you need: ½ cup warm water, ½ cup Apple Cider Vinegar or White Vinegar, and a cup. After mixing this together, pour it over your hair and scrub it in. Then, rinse it thoroughly with only water. Wait 8-12 hours before taking a normal shower!1

  • Listerine! You’ll need water and uncolored listerine mouthwash. Mix two parts water with one part  listerine. After shampooing, massage this solution into your hair and let it stay for 30 minutes before rinsing with water.

  • Tea tree oil! Simply add a few drops of tea tree oil to your shampoo and wash your hair normally!

  • Coconut oil! Massage 3-5 tablespoons of coconut oil into your scalp and let it sit for an hour. Works like a charm!2

  • Aloe Vera! Massage Aloe Vera into your scalp before shampooing. We always knew that Aloe was good for sunburn...makes sense that it would work for a dry scalp too!

  • Baking Soda! Wet your hair and rub baking soda into it a few times a week. After a few weeks, you will see improvement!3

While hairspray is notorious for creating the hole in our Ozone layer, people continue to use it in their hair. They know it’s not good for the environment...so how could it be good for hair? At the same time, I think it’s safe to say that people continue to use hairspray because they simply have no idea that it is even possible to make your own! Check out a few recipes we found:

  • You’ll need 1.5 cups of unfiltered water, 2 tablespoons of white sugar, 1 tablespoon of high proof alcohol, and 10-15 drops of your essential oil of choice. Boil water and dissolve the sugar in it. Allow it to return to room temperature, then add the alcohol and essential oils. Put this product in a spray bottle and start using it as hair spray! 1

  • Get 2 cups of distilled or filtered water, 2-3 tablespoons of high proof clear alcohol, 6-8 drops of lavender essential oil, and 1 whole orange if you have dark hair or lemon if you have light hair. Cut your orange or lemon into wedges and combine it with two cups of water in a small pot. Boil over medium-high heat until the liquid is reduced by half. Then, strain this with a cheesecloth into a measuring cup. Make sure you have one cup of liquid and if you don’t, add water. Mix alcohol and essential oils in one bowl, then add the cup of citrus juice. Pour this into a spray bottle and it’s ready to use! 2

  • We really go back to the basics with this next recipe. All you need is 1 cup of nearly boiled water and 4 tablespoons of sugar! If you want it be stronger, add more sugar. If you need it to be weaker, add less. 3

While sometimes it seems easier to buy a pre-made face mask from the store, you may be able to create a face mask at home with ingredients you ALREADY have in the house. Let’s check out a few of our favorite DIY face masks:

  • The egg and yogurt face mask! You need two egg whites and two tablespoons of plain yogurt. Mix these ingredients together, apply the created mixture to your face, and leave it on for a few minutes before rinsing it off with warm water!1 This face mask is good for all skin types!

  • Honey, berry, lemon juice and yogurt face mask! Mix 2 tablespoons of honey, 2 tablespoons of plain yogurt, ¼ cup mixed berries, and one tablespoon lemon juice in a blender. After you created your mixture, apply it to your face and allow it to sit for up to fifteen minutes. This face mask is great because it focuses on brightening your skin and exfoliating it!2

  • Mocha Mask! Blend together 2 tablespoons of ground coffee, 2 tablespoons of pure cocoa powder, 1 tablespoon of honey, 3 tablespoons of yogurt or sour cream. Create a mixture, rub it on your face and leave it for 10 minutes. This mask works really well to detoxify and de-puff your skin!3

  • Tropical Banana mask! Mash one banana together with a tablespoon of honey. Mix them together until you create a paste. After applying this to your face, allow it to stay on for up to 15 minutes. This is great for dry skin! 4

Whether you’ve run out of store-bought shampoo or you’re simply looking for an easy alternative to your current shampoo... making your own could be a great alternative! Here are a few at-home shampoo recipes you should consider trying:

  • Egg Shampoo! This shampoo will do wonders for your split ends. Take an ounce of rosemary, a pint of hot water and one egg. Steep the rosemary in the water for twenty minutes, then let it cool. After, beat your egg into it. Then, massage the mixture you just created into your hair and proceed to rinse it out, as you would regular shampoo.1

  • Essential Oil Shampoo! This shampoo is great for those with dry hair OR those with oily hair. In both cases, it leaves the hair soft and non greasy! You need 1/2 cup of liquid castile soap, ¼ cup of canned coconut milk, ¼ cup of honey, 2 tablespoons of fractionated coconut oil, one tablespoon vitamin e oil, and 40-50 drops of “essential oils”. If you have dandruff, 10 drops of lemon, lavender, melaleuca and rosemary essential oils would do. Or, if you have fragile hair, 20 drops of clary sage, 15 drops of lavender and 15 drops of wild orange essential oils would be perfect. Additionally, if you experience hair loss, using 10 drops rosemary, 10 drops of peppermint, 10 drops of cedarwood and 10 drops of lavender essential oils might be the key!2

  • Baking Soda Shampoo! This recipe thrives on simplicity. All you need is baking soda and water! According to DIYNatural.com, all you need to do is mix one tablespoon of baking soda and one cup of water to get the perfect shampoo. This website further suggests using an apple cider vinegar conditioning rinse to get the best results. The follow-up conditioner is made from one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar and one cup of water.3

Just like this website that specializes in the benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar says, “a vinegar hair rinse is so simple to use, it's dirt cheap and will make any hair smoother and easier to manage." Using Apple Cider Vinegar on your hair helps restore your hair’s PH balance, removing unwanted build up. Apple Cider Vinegar will also help close the cuticle scales in your hair, leaving your hair smoother and shinier. And- for as many years as Apple Cider Vinegar has been used as a natural hair care product in men and women- did you know that it could be used to help prevent hair loss as well?

To create a solution for hair loss, mix two tablespoons of Apple Cider Vinegar with a pinch of cayenne powder. Apply this mixture to your hair two hours before shampooing. Then, before going to bed, mix a royal jelly capsule with one tablespoon Apple Cider Vinegar. Rub this mixture onto any balding areas on your head and scalp.

  • Honey! Mix honey with curd and massage it into your split ends. Leave this in your hair for twenty minutes!

  • Massage in Avocado! This method is easy. Just smooth avocado into the ends of your hair and let it sit for fifteen minutes to an hour.

  • Use Mayonnaise! According to HomeRemedyShop.com, by applying this in your hair twice a week you are fighting against split ends!

  • Use a banana mix! Mash a ripe banana and add honey, egg and milk to create a paste. Apply it as a hair mask and wash it out after half an hour!
