hair tips

It seems as though in every advertisement we see, the model has ultra shiny hair. While it would be ridiculous to not credit that partially to photo editing, it can still make us envious...and desperately desire glossy hair! Here are a few easy tips to avoid every-day hair damage and help you get the shiny hair you have always wanted:

  • Take cooler showers! Don’t freeze yourself but, if you’re used to taking steaming-hot showers, it’d definitely be beneficial for you if you turned it down a notch. According to, heat splinters the surface of the hair and makes it seem uneven and dull. Rinsing your hair with cooler water for only ten seconds can help you achieve shinier hair!

  • Don’t rub your head with a towel after getting out of the shower! This causes breakage and damage to the wet-hair shaft. Instead, after getting out of the shower, you should slowly  brush your hair with a wide-toothed comb. That is the least damaging after-shower hair care method!1

  • Hair dry properly! When blow drying, remember to direct the nozzle down the hair shaft. Then, afterwards, use the “cool” setting on your blow dryer to finish off your hair. Just like rinsing with cold water at the end of a shower, this will help you achieve shinier hair!2

  • Use a silicone flat iron! This might not be something we think about often, but metallic and ceramic flat irons cause a lot more damage to hair than silicone flat irons do, due to the fact that they are not as effective and take much longer to use.

For as long as I can remember I was always told to shampoo before condition, but more recently I heard that you should actually condition your ends before you shampoo you hair.  This whole concept of reverse washing is pretty interesting. Most shampoos strip your hair of its natural oils, and then once you condition you hair feels soft and just like new.

What should you use first shampoo or conditioner?

Since shampoo rids your scalp of build up you should only use it on your scalp. says, “Basically, the idea is that your scalp produces oil that naturally cleanses and moisturizes your scalp and hair. The only reason to shampoo is to rinse those oils out when they have built up too much and give your scalp a reset.” If you put shampoo on your ends it could strip your hair leaving it dry and dull.

Reverse Washing

Reverse Washing is when you condition your hair first and then only shampoo the roots. says to, “Wet your hair then work in your favorite conditioner, concentrating almost solely on the ends of the hair, with just a tiny bit at the roots. Leave the conditioner in for five minutes, then rinse thoroughly. Only now should you shampoo, rinse, and repeat, making sure you don’t use more product than you need.” Conditioning your ends first will coat them and protect them from the stripping properties in your shampoo.
Here are 3 reasons why it’s important to condition your hair before you shampoo.

1. Makes Detangling Easier

If your hair is really knotty and you always have a problem detangling it, you should definitely try reverse washing your hair. The conditioner will coat your ends leaving them moisturized and tangle free. says, “Reversing the order in which you wash your hair is meant to give you all the detangling and glossing benefits of conditioner - along with extra volume - but without any residual side-effects.”

2. Adds Moisture

If you condition your hair first it would feel dull and weighed down. says, “The idea behind leaving a conditioner on for 2 - 3 minutes is so that the goodness can penetrate into the hair, so that when you rinse your hair properly, the work is done. However, when you don't wash out the conditioner properly, this will leave a film over the hair which attracts dirt and more, leaving it feeling lackluster.”You hair ends won’t be stripped from the harsh chemicals in shampoo, so they won’t feel dry and dull or weighed down.

3. Prevents Damage

If your ends are really damaged reverse washing is perfect because it will protect your ends from further damage. says, “Washing the conditioner out with shampoo can prevent it from weighing your hair down — and if your hair is prone being flat and greasy, this is a great thing, indeed.”

Instead of putting honey in your tea, why not try putting it on your hair. Honey has properties in it that are great for rejuvenating hair and bringing it back to life. says, “Honey with all it goodness does wonders for your hair! It cures dry, damaged and dull-looking hair. It helps retain moisture and get rid of dry, itchy flakes on your scalp. It also helps keep your hair clean, lustrous, healthy and shiny.”Honey can be used to treat a number of different beauty related problems.  Here are several different ways you can use honey on your hair!

1.Add Shine

Applying honey to your hair will create a beautiful shine and everyone will be complementing you on your hair! suggests, “There are two options. 1) Combine a spoonful of honey with a quart of warm water. 2.Moisturize Dry Scalp & Hair says, “On your scalp, this means you can say bye-bye to dry, itchy flakes. On your hair, a bit of moisture retention helps create hair so luscious and healthy it shines. “To moisturize dry locks, heat together three tablespoons of olive oil with two tablespoons of honey. Then add a tablespoon of lemon juice and mix well. It is best to apply the mixture to the scalp and hair when still warm. Leave it for a minimum of 30 minutes and then rinse and wash off.

3.Stimulate Hair Growth

Nothing will make your hair grow long overnight, but there are things you can do to increase the slow process of healthy hair growth. says, “As honey is an emollient, it also improves the health of the hair follicles which are responsible for hair growth. Researchers say that proper use of honey of treatment of hair can waken up the sleeping hair follicles which boost the growth of hair.” suggests to, “Add 2 tablespoons of cinnamon, 2 tablespoons of honey and 1 egg. Stir well with a fork to combine the ingredients. Beware if your olive oil is too warm; it may start to cook the egg. While the cinnamon and honey both promote hair growth, the protein and lecithin in the egg strengthen your strands.”

4.Cleanse Hair

Honey can be used with your shampoo to make your hair extra clean and give rid of any buildup. says, “The antiseptic and anti-bacterial qualities of honey keep the scalp clean. It also prevents fungal infection or psoriasis on the scalp. This further reduces the risk of developing dandruff and itchy scalp.” suggests, “To give your hair a regular boost of honey benefits, mix a teaspoon of honey with your shampoo and apply to your scalp and hair. Work it to lather and let it sit for two minutes or so and then, rinse it off.

Who knew that there were so many household products that we use on a daily basis that can be used on your hair. Here are 8 strange hair tips that totally work!

1. Toothbrush:

A toothbrush can be used on the hair in two different ways. The first way is fake fuller hair on thin hair. suggests, “Tousle the hair from root to crown with your fingertips as you blow-dry. Then, when your strands are dry, give the roots extra lift by back-combing their undersides with a clean, dry toothbrush. Rather than tearing at hair like a comb, the soft bristles will grip and rough up strands just enough to maintain lift.” The second way to use a toothbrush on your hair is to spray it with hairspray to tame flyaways.

2. Paper towels:

When your hair is wet, instead of drying it with a towel, use paper towels to avoid frizz. says, “The paper won’t create as much friction as a towel, so your hair ends up less frizzy. It also absorbs more water than a cloth towel, really speeding up your drying time.”

3. Dryer Sheets:

Don’t you hate those days where your hair just won’t cooperate and you can tame the static. Dryer sheets are the solution to that problem, they help tame hair static. says, “Dryer sheets take static out quickly and leave your hair smelling great. It's only a temporary fix though, so if it's a particularly dry winter day, be sure to stash a few in your purse! Open the dryer sheet completely, grab a fairly large section of hair and run the sheet from the scalp to the bottom of the strand.”

4. Paper Bag:

If you want to curl your hair but don’t want to use heat or don’t have a curling iron handy, a paper bag can do the trick. says, “"Paper bag" curls work on the same principle as rag curls. You just tear a big paper grocery bag into strips, and then roll your towel-dried or slightly dampened hair up in them. You can sleep on them or, for faster results, blow-dry and then spritz with hair spray.”

5. Tomato Ketchup:

Using Ketchup on Blonde hair can fix problems with chlorine related issues or a bad hair dye experience. says, “Blonde ladies can counteract green shades and rejuvenate their colour with the help of tomato ketchup. While it may not be the most appealing hair treatment, the red condiment can neutralize the green in your hair, leading to shiny, golden locks once more. Apply the tomato ketchup to hair and leave on for 20 minutes, then rinse off and shampoo as normal.”

6. Vodka:

Vodka can be used to tame frizzy hair and add shine to your hair. says, “Because it has a low pH, vodka can help de-frizz your strands. Add one shot to a 12-ounce conditioner (avoid those for color-treated hair). Shake well and apply a few times a month.”Click here for 5 different ways to use vodka on your hair!

7. Deodorant:

You can use deodorant on your hairline for those days where you are really hot and you need your hair to stay nice. says, “A thin layer of clear deodorant around my hairline and down my neck while I’m dry has saved many a hairstyle. See also: It can help keep your hair from sticking to your neck in bed.”Who would have thought something you put on your armpit is good for your hair also.

8.Cool Whip:

if your hair is extra dry and needs to be brought back to life, use cool whip to condition dry locks. suggests to, “Apply Cool Whip to dry hair, let sit for thirty minutes, then rinse well and shampoo.  The coconut and palm kernel oils in Cool Whip condition hair for a luxurious shine.” This tasty topping will not only make a sundae taste good but it will make your hair moisturized and shiny.

When your hair is over processed, dry, brittle and looks fried, you have a problem. The problem is your hair is damaged and needs to be brought back to life. I can tell you from personal experience that trying to repair damaged hair can take a while; there is no overnight cure for damaged hair. Making your hair healthy is a gradual process and is one you need to commit to. Here are 8 helpful tips for healing damaged hair!

  1. Use healthy hair products: Stop using the cheap stuff and buy shampoo and conditioner that will moisturize dry and damaged hair. If you get sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner that’s a plus. says, “Avoid shampoo and conditioner made with sodium laurel or laureth sulfates. These are industrial cleaning agents added to many soaps and shampoos; they clean your hair, but they also strip it of its natural protective oils in the process.” Also use oil to bring your hair back to life. Check out our previous blog posts on coconut oil and olive oil!
  2. Use Semi-permanent dye: If you can’t stop yourself from dying your hair, switch to a semi-permanent hair dye. It not as harsh or damaging to your hair. Try Love Your Color, it is enriched with Macadamia nut oil and will leave your hair shiny, healthy-looking and not over-processed. It also doesn’t contain Ammonia, Peroxide or PDD so compared to other dyes it won’t damage your hair.
  3. Diet and Exercise are important: If you only eat junk food, your hair will reflect that. If your hair is dry and brittle it could be caused by what you are eating on daily basis. Eat foods that are enriched with Omega-3 and drink lots of water. Click here for key foods for beautiful hair! Also make sure you are exercising several times a week. If you start eating healthy and exercising you will notice a HUGE change in the way your hair looks and feels.
  4. Protect your hair from Chlorine:  Chlorine will damage your hair so you need to be careful when you are swimming that you don’t expose your hair to it too often. You can protect your hair from any chlorine contact by wearing a swim cap in the pool. But for those of you, who don’t want to wear one, buy a clarifying shampoo that is known for removing chlorine or avoid putting your hair under in the pool at all costs. Tip: If you went swimming and got your hair wet, don’t sit in the sun without covering your hair with a hat or a towel. The sun mixed with the chlorine can cause even more damage to your hair.
  5. Hair Treatments: You can either buy a hair mask/treatment or make your own. Depending on how damaged your hair is will determine how many times you should use it. If your hair is really dry and damaged you should use it once or twice a week. Once your hair gets healthier you can switch it to once a month. says, “Periodically you can opt for either protein treatments or deep treatments for the hair. Proteins will rebuild the keratin in your hair, and deep treatments will help to retain moisture.” Click here for 10 DIY home remedies for dry hair!
  6. Make sure scalp is healthy: You hair needs to be nourished from root to tip. A scalp treatment can also do wonders on your hair. It will cleanse your scalp of any build up as well as stimulate hair growth and condition your hair.  Click here for 5 ways to get rid of a dry scalp!
  7. Rinse your hair with cool water: Not only will this add shine to your hair, but rinsing with cool water will close your hair cuticle and prevent further damaged especially if you use really hot water to take a shower. says, “Using hot water on your hair causes damage, but cool or even cold water causes the hair shafts to lie flat, giving your hair a shiny, glossy appearance.”
  8. Let your hair breathe: Give your hair a break from all the products and hot tools. Try to make a weekly routine of how and what you are going to do to your hair. Being prepared for the day will make your morning routine shorter. If you are daring enough challenge yourself to use no heat or products for two weeks or even a month. I’m telling you, you will see a major change in your hair. Tip: if you are going to put your hair in a ponytail or braid the looser the better. If your hair is too tightly wound in a braid or pony it could cause breakage.

It is important to know what type of hair brush you are currently using and if it is good for your hair and hair type. Different brushes can help achieve different styles with your hair.

  • Paddle Brush:  Usually made from plastic, timber or ceramic. They are great for smoothing and detangling hair. According to, “A paddle brush will save the day when it comes to brushing out thick tangled hair.  It is also used to smooth long thick hair when blow drying. A paddle brush is also a wonderful tool for massaging and stimulating the scalp. “Click here for a video tutorial on using a paddle brush.
  • Round Brush: Usually have wooden or plastic handles with grips for good traction. They have a round metal barrel for more movement. According to, “Round brushes are made to give you body and movement wherever you need it—be it volume at the root, a bend in the middle of the hair, or a nice natural curl at the bottom.” They come in various sizes to create all different kinds of looks.  According to, “Round brushes are great for volume because their shape encourages root lift. So if you want a smooth, volumized blow-dry, this is the best brush.” Click here for a video tutorial on how to use a round brush.
  • Ceramic Brush:  usually round shaped but different from a round brush. According to, “A ceramic brush is like a vent brush in that it allows air to pass through the brush while you are blow drying.  This causes the ceramic to heat up which leaves the hair smooth, shiny and free from frizz.” A ceramic brush is great for achieving waves and curls. Ceramic barrels/ brushes are good for your hair because they maintain a gentle, healthy level of heat to the hair. They also are great for eliminating frizz.

Vent Brushes are good for creating volume at the roots.  According to, “The vents between the bristles increase the flow of hot air to the hair which reduces drying time and enhances the style. This brush is not ideal for use on hair that has flyaway’s or is prone to static frizz because it won't help smooth or aid in styling.” Click here for tips on how to hold a vent brush.
  • Cushion Brush:  works great with medium-long hair and is very similar to the paddle brush, but has a soft cushion. Never use this on wet hair; it will cause damage and breakage.  According to, “The air-filled cushion conforms to the shape of the scalp and “absorbs” any shock that may arise out of harsh or intensive brushing. Cushion hairbrushes are therefore meant to be used on delicate hair that needs gentle styling.” Cushion Brushes are good for medium- long hair because they prevent hair from being stretched, split or broken.
  • Flat Oval Brush: This brush is great for people with fine hair. It can be used to stimulate the scalp and spread the hairs natural oils throughout the hair. It can create a ton of shine and is good for brushing out curls or waves for a softer look.
