While it would be ridiculous to not credit that partially to photo editing, it can still make us envious...and desperately desire glossy hair! Here are a few easy tips to avoid every-day hair damage and help you get the shiny hair you have always wanted:

  • Take cooler showers! Don’t freeze yourself but, if you’re used to taking steaming-hot showers, it’d definitely be beneficial for you if you turned it down a notch. According to health.com, heat splinters the surface of the hair and makes it seem uneven and dull. Rinsing your hair with cooler water for only ten seconds can help you achieve shinier hair!

  • Don’t rub your head with a towel after getting out of the shower! This causes breakage and damage to the wet-hair shaft. Instead, after getting out of the shower, you should slowly  brush your hair with a wide-toothed comb. That is the least damaging after-shower hair care method!1

  • Hair dry properly! When blow drying, remember to direct the nozzle down the hair shaft. Then, afterwards, use the “cool” setting on your blow dryer to finish off your hair. Just like rinsing with cold water at the end of a shower, this will help you achieve shinier hair!2

  • Use a silicone flat iron! This might not be something we think about often, but metallic and ceramic flat irons cause a lot more damage to hair than silicone flat irons do, due to the fact that they are not as effective and take much longer to use.

For as long as I can remember I was always told to shampoo before condition, but more recently I heard that you should actually condition your ends before you shampoo you hair.  This whole concept of reverse washing is pretty interesting. Most shampoos strip your hair of its natural oils, and then once you condition you hair feels soft and just like new.

What should you use first shampoo or conditioner?

Since shampoo rids your scalp of build up you should only use it on your scalp. Hellogigles.com says, “Basically, the idea is that your scalp produces oil that naturally cleanses and moisturizes your scalp and hair. The only reason to shampoo is to rinse those oils out when they have built up too much and give your scalp a reset.” If you put shampoo on your ends it could strip your hair leaving it dry and dull.

Reverse Washing

Reverse Washing is when you condition your hair first and then only shampoo the roots. Dailymail.co.uk says to, “Wet your hair then work in your favorite conditioner, concentrating almost solely on the ends of the hair, with just a tiny bit at the roots. Leave the conditioner in for five minutes, then rinse thoroughly. Only now should you shampoo, rinse, and repeat, making sure you don’t use more product than you need.” Conditioning your ends first will coat them and protect them from the stripping properties in your shampoo.

I can tell you from personal experience that trying to repair damaged hair can take a while; there is no overnight cure for damaged hair. Making your hair healthy is a gradual process and is one you need to commit to. Here are 8 helpful tips for healing damaged hair!

  1. Use healthy hair products: Stop using the cheap stuff and buy shampoo and conditioner that will moisturize dry and damaged hair. If you get sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner that’s a plus. According to Prevention.com, “Round brushes are made to give you body and movement wherever you need it—be it volume at the root, a bend in the middle of the hair, or a nice natural curl at the bottom.” They come in various sizes to create all different kinds of looks.  According to stylenoted.com, “Round brushes are great for volume because their shape encourages root lift.   • Ceramic Brush:  usually round shaped but different from a round brush. According to About.com, “A ceramic brush is like a vent brush in that it allows air to pass through the brush while you are blow drying.  This causes the ceramic to heat up which leaves the hair smooth, shiny and free from frizz.” A ceramic brush is great for achieving waves and curls. Ceramic barrels/ brushes are good for your hair because they maintain a gentle, healthy level of heat to the hair. They also are great for eliminating frizz.
  • Vent Brush: can be round or flat, with bristles in-between each vent or opening. Vent Brushes are good for creating volume at the roots.  According to Beautyshoponline.com, “The vents between the bristles increase the flow of hot air to the hair which reduces drying time and enhances the style.   • Cushion Brush:  works great with medium-long hair and is very similar to the paddle brush, but has a soft cushion. Never use this on wet hair; it will cause damage and breakage.  According to wisegeek.com, “The air-filled cushion conforms to the shape of the scalp and “absorbs” any shock that may arise out of harsh or intensive brushing. Cushion hairbrushes are therefore meant to be used on delicate hair that needs gentle styling.” Cushion Brushes are good for medium- long hair because they prevent hair from being stretched, split or broken.
  • Flat Oval Brush: This brush is great for people with fine hair. It can be used to stimulate the scalp and spread the hairs natural oils throughout the hair. It can create a ton of shine and is good for brushing out curls or waves for a softer look.
  • Wide Tooth Comb: are perfect to use on wet hair. When hair is wet is it more fragile and prone to breakage and damage.  It works great at detangling hair. When your hair is wet you should start at the bottom and work your way up the hair shaft. It is good on all hair types.
